history

Evangelical Church Neuenmarkt

Neuenmarkt and Hegnabrunn were first mentioned in documents in 1398. The Counts of Orlamünde and the Himmelkron monastery they founded were wealthy in both communities. The office of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth was in the Franconian Empire from 1500 . With this it fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and was sold to Bavaria in 1810.

As early as 1848, Neuenmarkt received a Ludwig-Süd-Nord-Bahn station, the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station, and is the starting point for the steep incline railway line . Since heavy trains had to be pushed on this ramp, a railway depot (Bw) was built in Neuenmarkt , which was in operation until 1975. Since then, the depot has served as accommodation for the German Steam Locomotive Museum (DDM).

The community of Neuenmarkt has existed since April 1, 1971 as a merger of Neuenmarkt with the previously independent community of Hegnabrunn.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the municipality grew from 2736 to 2946 by 210 inhabitants or 7.7%. On December 31, 2000, Neuenmarkt had 3229 inhabitants.

Others

In Neuenmarkt was the Ruth Evangelical Girls' Education Center, which was run by deaconesses from the Hensoltshöhe motherhouse in Gunzenhausen . The girls housed there were brutally treated in the 1950s and 1960s. With the exception of going to church on Sundays, they were locked in the house 24 hours a day and were forbidden from talking to each other. Early in the morning they had to scrub the floor on their knees until it shone, sewing for companies in the region during the day. They were beaten and brought back by the police when they tried to escape; They were not allowed to choose their future profession freely.

A central contact and advice center was set up in 2012 at the Bavarian Family and Social Center (ZBFS) for former home children . In order to mitigate the consequences of home education that still exist today, the establishment of a fund was suggested in 2009, and one of the former inmates of House Ruth was appointed to its advisory board.
