history

Copper mountain

The Bamberg bishop Heinrich II von Sternberg granted city rights in 1326. At that time, over 3000 people lived there. In mining around 1,700 miners were employed. In Kupferberg, copper contents of 15% per ton of ore were mined at times , which is still considered one of the most outstanding copper mineralizations in Europe. The former office of the bishopric of Bamberg was swapped between Bavaria and Prussia after secularization in the main state comparison. With the Principality of Bayreuth , it fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807. In 1810 the Kingdom of Bavaria came into being . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

The Sebastian Chapel in Kupferberg was rebuilt in 1824. The city belonged to the dissolved Stadtsteinach district and was incorporated into the Kulmbach district on July 1, 1972 .

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 1150 to 1049 by 101 or 8.8%. On December 31, 1996, Kupferberg had 1214 inhabitants.

Natural monuments

  • The 589 meter high Peterleinstein magnetic mountain between Kupferberg and Marktleugast protrudes prominently from the forest. A special feature are the rare plants that can be found there. The mountain consists of greenish serpentinite , a very basic rock on which only sparse vegetation thrives; it is also magnetic.
