Geographical-statistical-historical manual of the Kingdom of Bavaria
The geographical-statistical-historical manual of the Kingdom of Bavaria is a two-volume encyclopedia that was written by Pleikard Stumpf and appeared in 1852 and 1853 respectively. The full title is: “Bavaria. A geographical-statistical-historical manual of the kingdom. For the Bavarian people. ”The page numbering is continuous.
Mainly the work consists of a description of the administrative districts with their respective immediate cities and district courts and some "strange" places contained therein (pp. 49-1040). This is preceded by a short treatise on the Kingdom of Bavaria (pp. 5–34) and a list of the Bavarian regents (pp. 35–48). At the end there is a place register (pp. 1041–1088).
The administrative regions are in the order of Upper Bavaria , Lower Bavaria , Palatinate , Upper Palatinate , Upper Franconia , Middle Franconia , Lower Franconia , Swabia discussed. The scheme of the approx. 10 page long descriptions is always identical:
- Brief outline of the prehistory of the administrative district
- geographic and topographic information (location, area and use, mountains, water and climate)
- Economy and infrastructure (agriculture, trade, industry and transport)
- Population (number of inhabitants, number of families, religious affiliation, number of men liable for military service)
- Administrative bodies (regional courts, rent offices, building inspections, forest offices)
- the immediate cities and regional courts of the administrative district in alphabetical order. The 3 to 4 page long descriptions have the same scheme, but only in key points. Individual “strange” places follow with a historical outline and information on the number of residents and residential buildings. At the end, the remaining municipalities are listed in note form with the number of residents and residential buildings.
Pleikard Stumpf himself does not provide any information about which sources he used. There is only general talk of the "best works" being there. However, the basis of the statistical data is "the most changing", as the author himself admits. A review of the footnotes shows that the yearbooks of the respective administrative districts, the district descriptions published in the 1820s (e.g. The Retzatkreis of the Kingdom of Bavaria ), various registers and individual descriptions were used.
