history

Until the church is planted

The name Himmelkrons was originally Pretzendorf; a castle of the Counts of Weimar-Orlamünde was also located here . In 1279, Pretzendorf Castle was converted into a Cistercian monastery , which was named Kloster Himmelkron . In 1545 it was abolished during the Reformation . The Margraves of Brandenburg-Bayreuth took over the monastery property and built a summer residence here. In the 16th century the name Himmelkron (initially: Himmelcron) was transferred to the place. The later office of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth, which had been Prussian since 1792, fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and came to Bavaria in 1810. In 1818 Himmelkron became an independent political municipality.

Culture and sights

  • Himmelkron Monastery
  • Baille-Maille-Lindenallee
  • St. Christophorus motorway church:
Catholic church, consecrated in 1998, built according to plans by the Bamberg diocesan master builder Eugen Vonmetz. It houses the church, a working day chapel, a meditation room, a meeting place with hall, group rooms and kitchen. The most eye-catching architectural feature is the unusually strongly accentuated bell tower with a height of 36 meters, which can be seen from afar from all directions. The main building is reminiscent of a ski jump. In the church forecourt, the pavement carries a replica of the labyrinth from Chartres Cathedral . The two-winged portal of the church is the colorful vestibule door with the name CHRISTOPHORUS designed by Gerhard Böhm and manufactured by Peter Luban. The interior of the church is worth seeing. There is plenty of parking space, also at the Opel and Frankenfarm rest houses next to the motorway church. Every year around 120,000 visitors are counted through a light barrier.

traffic

The community is on the federal highway 303 and the federal highway 9 (junction 39 - Bad Berneck / Himmelkron).
