Wirsberg is a market in the district of Kulmbach ( Upper Franconia administrative district ).

Geographical location
The climatic health resort is located in the Franconian Forest Nature Park on federal highway 303 , about 20 kilometers north of Bayreuth .

history
Until the church is planted
Wirsberg was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 13th century . The castle ruin Wirsberg rises on a rock massif in the center of Wirsberg. The place gave its name to the family of Wirsberg . The Rabensteiner von Wirsberg owned several castle estates. The former Oberamt of the Prussian Principality of Bayreuth , which had been Prussian since 1792 , fell to France in the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 and became part of Bavaria in 1810 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, the municipality of Wirsberg with the district Sessenreuth was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .
Incorporations
On April 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Neufang was incorporated with its eight districts.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the market grew by 81 inhabitants or 4.5% from 1790 to 1871. On December 31, 2001 Wirsberg had 2068 inhabitants.

Hermann Anselstetter (SPD) has been mayor since 1978. In the 2020 local elections, he was defeated in the first ballot with 43.3% of his opponent Jochen Trier from the Free Voters , who received 56.7% of the vote.
Community partnerships
Wirsberg maintains a communal partnership with the municipality of Georgenberg in the Upper Palatinate Forest .
Culture and sights
- The community is a member of Cittaslow , a movement founded in Italy in 1999 to slow down and improve the quality of life in cities.
- The parish church of St. Johannis, built in margrave style, with a picture that may have come from the school of Lucas Cranach , and the pulpit altar by Wolfgang Adam Knoll in the church are worth seeing .
- Ruins of the Heilingskirche near Neufang (also known as the Three Marys Church). The former pilgrimage church fell into disrepair after the Reformation .

The new market-Wirsberg Station is located in the neighboring village of New Market at the foot of the steep section inclined plane of the Bamberg-Hof railway and the branching here route to Bayreuth .
Wirsberg is located on the Euregio Egrensis long-distance cycle route and the Baltic Sea-Upper Bavaria (D11) long-distance cycle route .
