Cittaslow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cittàslow (slow city; Italian città "city", English slow "slow") is a movement and a network. The internationally active association based in the municipality of Orvieto was founded in Italy in 1999 .

The association is inspired by the slow food movement. The main goals are to improve the quality of life in cities and to prevent the unification and Americanization of cities where franchise businesses dominate. Supporting and emphasizing cultural diversity and the own and special values of the city and its surroundings are also central Cittàslow goals. In a broader sense, Cittàslow can be added to the so-called slow movement (see deceleration ).

Notice board on Cittàslow networks

From January 2006, Cittàslow networks were established in Germany , Norway , Great Britain and Spain . In other countries, too, villages and towns are working towards the accreditation of the Cittàslow organization.

Membership and its requirements

Like Slow Food, Cittàslow is a membership organization. Full membership of Cittàslow is only allowed in cities with a population of less than 50,000. To qualify for membership, a city typically has to meet at least 50% of the criteria in a self- assessment process; only then can she apply to the national Cittàslow network. The criteria extend to the seven subject areas of environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, upgrading of local products, hospitality, awareness and quality of the landscape. Membership also requires an annual contribution to the organization.

In addition to the Cittàslow membership, there is the category of Cittàslow supporters. This possibility was created in 2005 and is intended for institutions, companies and cities that support the goals of Cittàslow, but cannot qualify for full membership.
