geography

The former Rodney District stretched from the Kaipara District in the north to the former Waitakere City and North Shore City in the south. The Tasman Sea bordered to the west and the Hauraki Gulf to the east . At the 2006 census, the district had 89,559 inhabitants.

history

On the basis of the Local Government Act 1974 , the Rodney District was newly formed in 1989 by merging the Helensville Borough and Rodney County Council . At that time New Zealand was administratively organized and divided into counties , towns and boroughs . The law made it possible for the Labor government at the time to create 86 in 850 different administrative units. In an administrative reform in 2000, the regional administrations were reorganized again. This left 11 purely regional councils, 12 city councils and 54 district councils. On November 1, 2010, the Auckland Regional Council was then merged with seven Territorial Authority (local authorities) and the Auckland Council was formed. the Rodney District is one of the seven.

The former district today

The former Rodney District is now run as a district by the Auckland Council with its own Local Board with nine elected political representatives . This takes care of local matters.
