Districts in New Zealand
Districts (English: Territorial Authority ) form the second level of the administrative structure of the country in New Zealand .
While eleven regions and six unitary authorities are located on the first level of the administrative structure , there are a total of 67 Territorial Authorities on the second level , of which 13 cities have a City Council and 54 districts have a District Council . Of them, two cities ( Auckland and Nelson City ) and four districts ( Gisborne District , Tasman District , Marlborough District and the Chatham Islands Territory ) also perform regional administration tasks in addition to city or district administrationUnitary Authorities . The districts are not under the administration of the regions. As a result, there are seven districts, which are in at least two regions, and one ( Taupo District ), which is even distributed over four regions.

Tokelau , the Cook Islands and Niue manage each other relatively autonomously, with Tokelau not only being associated with New Zealand, but an integral part of New Zealand.
history
In 1989, as part of the administrative reforms, many of the 74 districts that exist today were created. Some changes have occurred since then:
- 1991: Invercargill was again proclaimed a City Council .
- 1992: The former Nelson-Marlborough region was dissolved and the three Unitary Authorities Tasman , Nelson and Marlborough were founded.
- 1995: The Chatham Islands Council was transformed into a district with the functions of a region.
- 2004: Tauranga was proclaimed a City Council again on March 1st.
- 2006: In the course of a referendum on March 6, the Banks Peninsula District Council was dissolved. The area has been part of Christchurch City Council since then .
