The Buller District is an administrative unit in the West Coast region in New Zealand . The district council, called the Buller District Council , is based in the city of Westport , as is the district administration.

geography

Geographical location

The Buller District is the northernmost district in the West Coast region . It has a pure land area of 7942 km² and had at the census in 2013 with 10,473 inhabitants, a population density of 1.3 inhabitants per km².

The western border of the district forms the coastline to the Tasman Sea . It borders the Gray District to the south and the Hurunui District to the southeast . The eastern and northern parts are enclosed by the Tasman District . Except for a coastal strip around Westport , the district is determined by the mountain landscape of the northern New Zealand Alps . The largest river is the Buller River , which flows into the Tasman Sea at Westport . To the east and south of the town of Reefton , which is around 45 km southeast of Westport , there are opencast mines in which coal and gold are mined.

The two largest cities in the district are Westport and Reefton with around 4000 and 1000 inhabitants.

climate

The Buller District is, like the entire region of the West Coast, preferably under the influence of southwest and northeast wind currents, which can come from different directions depending on the local and topology. Southwest to westerly winds usually bring a lot of clouds that rain down on the western slopes of the New Zealand Alps and thus lead to considerable amounts of precipitation. Between 3000 and over 6000 mm per year are possible depending on the location. In the area around Westport, rainfall is between 2000 and 2300 mm per year. The mean daytime temperatures in summer are around 20 ° C, falling to 10 ° C at high altitudes. In winter, mean daytime temperatures range between 1 ° C and 3 ° C, between Westport and Greymouth up to 7 ° C, at altitudes below freezing point. The duration of sunshine along the entire coast and in the northern part of the west coast region is between 1600 and 1800 hours per year, but in the mountains it drops to less than 1300 hours.

history

According to Māori mythology , Polynesian immigrants came with the Tahiriangi Waka around 950 AD and settled on the west coast. The first Europeans are said to have come to the coast as early as 1642, hunted seals and searched for mineral resources. Then came researchers and surveyors in the 1840s. People like Charles Heaphy , William Fox , Thomas Brunner and Charles Buller left their mark. Gold was found in the Buller River a decade later , resulting in a gold rush in the area and the creation of Westport .

population

Population development

Of the 10,473 residents of the district in 2013, 963 residents were of Māori origin (9.2%). This means that 0.2% of the country's Māori population lived in the Buller District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 25,200,  compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 91.6% said they were European, 9.8% said they had Māori roots, 0.9% came from the islands of the Pacific and 2.3% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 11.7% of the population said they were born overseas. 1.8% of the population spoke Māori as the second most common language after English, and among the Māori , 12.4% did so.

politics

administration

The Buller District is again divided into three wards , the Westport Ward with six Councilors (councilors) and the Seddon Ward and the Inangahua Ward with two Councilors each . The eleven Councilors together with the Mayor form the District Council and are elected every three years.

Infrastructure

Road traffic

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highway 6 , which , coming from the northeast of Nelson , continues via Westport on the coast to Greymouth . Reefton is connected by New Zealand State Highway 7 and State Highways 65 , 67 and 69 cross links within the district.

Air traffic

Several Sounds Air planes operate daily to and from Wellington from the district's small airport, which is located northwest of downtown Westport at the mouth of the Buller River and is run by the Westport Airport Authority .
