The New Zealand State Highway 7 ( State Highway 7 or SH 7 for short ) is a national highway on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The trunk road has a length of 272 km, is located in the northern half of the South Island and was formerly one of the eight national state highways . The two-lane road (one for each direction of travel) over its entire length crosses the New Zealand Alps and connects the West Coast region with Canterbury . At the same time, the SH 7 creates a connection between the two longest highways on New Zealand's South Island , New Zealand State Highway 1 and New Zealand State Highway 6 .
In rural areas, additional overtaking lanes a few kilometers long are laid out as third lanes at irregular intervals. The Kilometrierung of the route runs from east to west.
Routing
The State Highway 7 leaves the State Highway 1 in Waipara , about 60 km north of Christchurch and runs initially in a northerly direction. The road crosses several rivers and grazes the Balmoral State Forest . Immediately north of Culverden , the SH 7 then reaches the valley of the Waiau River and turns west from there, following the valley of the Hope River to the north and then the valley of the Lewis River to Lewis Pass , after which it bends west and to follow the valley of the Maruia River where the road passes the small spa town of Maruia Springs . From there, the SH 7 continues its route in a north-westerly direction to Springs Junction , where it connects to the New Zealand State Highway 65 , which leads north . From Springs Junction , the SH 7 crosses a smaller pass called Rahu Saddle and then follows the valley of the Inangahua River to the town of Reefton . From there the highway swings to the southwest and follows the course of the Gray River up to two kilometers before it flows into the Tasman Sea near Greymouth , where the SH 7 connects to the SH 6 and ends there.
The State Highway 7 has a small side road known as State Highway 7A is called. This 9.4 km long road connects the SH 7 over the imposing Waiau Bridge with the health resort of Hanmer Springs .
