The New Zealand State Highway 44 ( State Highway 44 or SH 44 for short ) is a trunk road of national importance on the North Island of New Zealand .

geography

The road is only 5.2 km long, making it one of the shortest highways in New Zealand. The entire length of the road runs through the city of New Plymouth and has one lane in each direction.

history

The SH 44 was in response to an increase in truck traffic between New Zealand State Highway 3 and the port of Taranaki and the resulting road damage on the preferred route via Breakwater Road , St. Aubyn Street and Molesworth Street . Initially, the operator of the New Zealand highways , Transit New Zealand , opposed the inclusion of the new road in the highway network, as the maintenance of the road would have been left to the New Plymouth District Council and the New Zealand State Highway 45 less than 200 m runs parallel. However, the SH 45 has steeper gradients, uses one-way streets and has more traffic lights, so that the route is not very suitable for heavy traffic. Therefore, the SH 44 was finally added to the trunk road network.

Routing (as of 2008)

The highway begins at the point northeast of downtown New Plymouth where Leach Street (one-way west) and Courtenay Street (one-way east) meet with north-south running Eliot Street . The highway continues on Eliot Street to Molesworth Street , then along this street in a westerly direction and changes its name first to St Aubyn Street and then to Breakwater Road . The road ends in the port of Taranaki , with both port entrances being part of SH 44 . The first access is via Bayly Road and Ocean View Parade , the second is the end of Breakwater Road .
