The New Zealand State Highway 3 ( State Highway 3 or SH 3 for short ) is a trunk road of national importance on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The trunk road has a length of 489 km and serves the west coast of the north island of the country. The two-lane road (one for each direction of travel) over its entire length connects State Highway 1 in the Waikato region and State Highway 2 in the Manawatu-Wanganui region . The kilometers run from north to south.
route
The road leaves the SH 1 in Hamilton and initially runs south through agricultural areas and crosses Te Awamutu . Parts of this section of the route have been expanded into a four-lane expressway. From Otorohanga the road follows the valley of the Waipa River to Te Kuiti . Shortly thereafter, the New Zealand State Highway 3 branches off to the southeast. Then the SH 3 turns to the southwest and crosses thinly populated farmland, crosses several mountain ridges and then follows the Awakino Gorge towards the coast. In Eight Miles Junction , eleven kilometers after Te Kuiti, the SH 4 leads south from the SH 3. The expressway now follows the coast of North Taranaki Bight . On the Tongaporoutu River , the road turns inland to avoid coastal cliffs. She climbs Mount Messenger and then descends through river valleys back to the coast near Urenui .
Shortly after Brixton , the 15.6 km long SH 3a branches off, which instead of via New Plymouth leads directly south and meets the SH 3 again in Inglewood. Then the road reaches New Plymouth , where it swings sharply south inland. The SH 45 continues to follow the coast and bypasses Mount Taranaki in the west. The SH 3 runs east past Mount Taranaki via Inglewood , Stratford and Eltham to Hawera on the South Taranaki Bight .
From Hawera, the road follows the coast of South Taranaki Bight in a south-easterly direction to Patea and Wanganui . At Bulls she meets SH 1 again. Both now run together for six kilometers and cross the Rangitikei River to Sanson . Here Highway 3 runs southeast towards Palmerston North . After crossing the Manawatu River , the route follows its south bank through the Manawatu Gorge to its end point, the connection with State Highway 2 near Woodville in Wairarapa .
The two sections of the route through the gorges Awakino Gorge and Manawatu Gorge are occasionally closed due to landslides and rockslides in heavy rain.
Construction of a bypass around Bell Block , a satellite city of New Plymouth, began in 2007.
