Sanson is a village in the Manawatu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The village was named after Henry Sanson , a secretary for the Hutt Small Farms Accociation .

geography

The village is located approximately 12 km west of Feilding and 22 km northwest of Palmerston North in the wide plain of the Rangitikei River and its tributaries. In the village, the New Zealand State Highway 1 coming from the southwest and the New Zealand State Highway 3 coming from the southeast meet, connecting the village with Foxton , around 30 km south-southwest and Palmerston North in the south-east on one side and 6 km away lying bulls on the western side of the village. The two state highways run on the same route between Sanson and Bulls .

history

In 1871 Henry Sanson acquired around 2000 hectares of land that stretched south from what is now Sanson . Sanson parceled out the land and sold it to European settlers.

From 1883 to 1945 the village had a connection to the railway line of the Foxton Branch with the Sanson Tramway via Himatangi .

population

In the 2013 census, the village had 537 inhabitants, 9.1% more than in the 2006 census.

economy

The village prefers to live on farming. In the village there are some shops with handicrafts and antique objects.

Education

With the Sanson School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2015, 30 students attended the school. In front of the entrance to the school is the Sanson war memorial gate , which was inaugurated on August 31, 1924 and commemorates those who died in the village during the First World War .
