Bulls is a place in the Rangitikei District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The town is named after James Bull , who founded the town and who owned the town's first general store. Originally called Bull Town , it was renamed Clifton and finally renamed Bulls again at the insistence of Sir William Fox , New Zealand's second Prime Minister at the end of the 19th century .
geography
The place is about 28 km northwest of Palmerston North at the intersection of the two New Zealand State Highways 1 and 3 .
history
The former Bulls Bridge spanned the Rangitikei River southeast of the bay . It collapsed suddenly in 1973 without claiming any death.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 1,515 inhabitants, 8.8% less than in the 2006 census.
Many of the airmen from the nearby Royal New Zealand Air Force base in Ohakea live in Bulls .
Personalities
- Chris Amon (1943–2016), racing car driver, was born in Bulls and owns a farm there.
