The Manawatu District is an administrative unit in the Manawatu-Wanganui region in New Zealand . The district council, called Manawatu District Council ( District Council ), is based in Feilding City , as is the district administration.

With 2567 km² of pure land area, the district is the third smallest district in the Manawatu-Wanganui region. With 27,456 inhabitants in 2013, the district has a population density of 10.7 inhabitants per km², making it the district with the third highest population density in the Region.

The Manawatu District is enclosed in the west and north by the Rangitikei District . In the northeast the Central Hawke's Bay District borders, which already belongs to the Hawke's Bay region, in the east the Tararua District and as a natural border the Ruahine Range , in the southeast the city of Palmerston North and in the south the Horowhenua District . A very small stretch of coast to the west gives the district access to the Tasman Sea .

The district lies in a plain open to the coast, which is characterized by the Oroua River and numerous smaller rivers. The only town in the district is Feilding , which has around 10,500 inhabitants . All other places have less than 1000 inhabitants.

The mean daytime temperatures are between 22 and 24 ° C in summer and between 3 and 7 ° C in winter, depending on the altitude. The duration of sunshine is over 2000 hours per year near the coast and decreasing towards the northeast up to 1800 hours per year. The precipitation is between 800 and 1100 mm depending on the location.

Population development

Of the district's 27,456 inhabitants, 3,924 were of Māori origin in 2013 (14.3%). This means that 0.7% of the country's Māori population lived in the Manawatu District . The median income for the population in 2013 was NZ $ 28,400  , compared to NZ $ 28,500 national average.

Origin and languages

When asked about ethnic group membership in the 2013 census, 89.3% said they were European, 14.8% said they had Māori roots, 1.6% came from the islands of the Pacific and 1.8% % came from Asia (multiple answers were possible). 10.4% of the population said they were born overseas and 3.2% of the population spoke Māori , of the Māori 18.1%.

The Manawatu District is in turn divided into three wards , the Feilding Ward with five Councilors (councilors), the Southern Manawatu Rural Ward with three and the Northern Manawatu Rural Ward with two Councilors . Together with the Mayor (mayor) they form the District Council (district council). The mayor and the ten councilors are re-elected every three years.

The district is connected by the New Zealand State Highways 1 , 3 and 54 as well as the North Island Main Trunk Railway , a railway line that connects Auckland with Wellington in the south of the North Island and runs directly through Feilding .
