Feilding is a city in the Manawatu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the administrative seat of the district.

geography

Feilding is around 15 km northwest of Palmerston North in the middle of the Manawatu Plains and thus in the floodplain of some rivers. State Highway 54 leads north from Palmerston North through the village . The State Highway 3 runs southwest out of town and the North Iceland Main Trunk Railway crosses the center of the city.

history

Is named Feilding by Colonel William Feilding , director of the Emigrants and Colonists Aid Corporation Ltd. , a former British organization that tried to reduce unemployment in the motherland of the British Empire by helping people willing to settle in British colonies , including New Zealand. In 1871 the corporation acquired about 400 km² of land from the then provincial administration in Wellington and brought the first British settlers to their settlement area, later Feilding , on January 22nd, 1874 .

In the 2013 census, the city had 10,656 inhabitants, 5.0% more than in the 2006 census.

Feilding is the center of an agricultural district.

Attractions

From Feilding , the Feilding and District Steam Rail Society starts trips with historic steam locomotives . In the village itself is the 1904 Building , a listed building built in 1904. Feilding was voted the most beautiful town in New Zealand 14 times by 2014 .

Culture

The alternative rock band Evermore is originally from Feilding .

Sports

To the south of the village is the Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon , one of the most important motorsport racetracks in the country, while in the east of the village there is a small airfield.

Natural events

In 2004, around 140 houses were destroyed in floods.
