The Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, formerly Manfeild Autocourse, is a motorsport racetrack in Feilding , New Zealand , about 130 km northeast of the capital Wellington .

The route, which in its current form is considered very demanding, was built in 1973 and expanded in 1990 to meet international standards. It is extremely popular with spectators and drivers. In addition to racing events, a large number of public events take place on the track area.

history

The Circuit Chris Amon was built and inaugurated in 1973 by Manawatu Car Club Incorporated as Manfeild Autocourse. Initially it was 3,033 meters long. In 1990 the automobile club bought additional land and expanded the track, which was subsequently homologated by the FIM for motorcycle racing .

In 2004 the three owners merged to form the Manfeild Park Trust , on the grounds of which the racetrack is located , in order to advance the development of the area, which also includes a 7750 m² multifunctional stadium , which is often used as an equestrian facility. The construction of new pit facilities, a driving safety center and an agricultural business park are planned for the future .

In 2016, the track was renamed after the New Zealand Formula 1 driver Chris Amon .

route

Motorsport events will only be held on the shorter Grand Prix track, as the section added later does not have an FIA license. The route can be traveled in both directions, but is mostly used clockwise. Only motorcycle races can be held in the opposite direction with a special permit.

Events

A large number of races for national New Zealand racing series, such as the Formula Ford, the Mini Challenge, the Porsche GT3 Cup or the Toyota Racing Series, are held on the Circuit Chris Amon. In addition, a large number of public events take place on the route area, including horse shows , conferences , bike races and fireworks .

Between 1988 and 1992 , the Superbike World Championship staged four times on the track.
