The Sentul International Circuit is a motorsport - racing circuit in Citeureup ( West Java ) in Indonesia .

It is mainly used for motorcycle races as well as the Asian Formula 3 championship and the A1 Grand Prix . The route is fast and very wide, which allows many different routes. Due to the geographical location near the equator , the air temperatures and humidity are very often high , which makes racing very strenuous.

In addition to the Grand Prix course, there are tracks for motocross , autocross and go-kart racing, as well as a three-star hotel and a golf course .

history

The Sentul International Circuit is the result of the first serious attempt to build a Formula 1 track in Asia outside of Japan . In 1990 Hutomo Mandala Putra, the son of then President Suharto , personally supported the project. After its completion in 1994, however, the track was quickly overtaken by progress, especially in terms of track safety, and was unsuitable for Formula 1 races.

The motorcycle world championship , however, was in 1996 and in 1997 the Grand Prix of Indonesia for motorcycles made in Sentul. The Superbike World Championship was also held annually on the slopes from 1994 to 1997 .

The Asian financial crisis of 1997 ultimately ensured that no races with World Championship status were held in Sentul for years. With the A1 Grand Prix , a global racing series made its debut on the slopes again in 2005. A return of the Superbike World Championship was also planned for 2008 , but the date was canceled.
