2006/07 A1GP season
The 2006/07 A1GP season was held from September 29, 2006 to April 29, 2007 on a total of eleven racetracks. Germany emerged as world champion.
Venues for the 2006/2007 season |
overview
The 2006/2007 season was the second in the A1GP series. It was dominated by Team Germany , which with Nico Hülkenberg at the wheel achieved nine wins and finally celebrated the championship for the first time. Second place went to New Zealand with three race wins, followed by the twice-victorious team from Great Britain, which was able to repeat its position from the previous year. Race victories were also achieved by Team South Africa, Team Malaysia (three times), Team Netherlands, Team Italy and Team Switzerland.
Before the season, series founder Sheikh Maktum Hascher Maktum Al Maktum announced his resignation as A1GP chairman and at the same time announced the sale of his series shares. Successor as chairman was his previous deputy and serial co-founder Tony Teixeira . The transaction with the British investment company RAB Capital plc was completed in December.
automobile
The Lola - Zytek with Cooper Tires was still used as a standard car , see A1GP cars .
Teams
A total of 24 teams took part in the season ( see team and driver overview ), including two newcomers in Singapore and Greece. The announced participation of an A1 Team Turkey failed. The teams from Austria, Japan and Russia were no longer part of the series.
Again, not all teams competed continuously. Team Portugal was absent from the first seven race weekends of the season due to financial problems. After the Portuguese financial group Banif Group was won as the new main sponsor, it made its comeback on the racetrack in Durban. The team from Singapore did not compete in Sentul because regular driver Christian Murchison was unable to attend due to a back injury and a replacement driver could not be found. A shoulder injury sustained by Murchison in the main race in Durban ultimately prevented him from participating in the last three race weekends. Team Greece only took part in the first two events in Zandvoort and Brno. After that, it no longer appeared, which was initially justified by the restructuring of the team and the unavailability of the selected regular driver due to his military service.
- Explanation: Drivers in lower case only took part in the second or third training.
Racing calendar
The calendar for the 2006/2007 season again comprised eleven racing weekends:
Before the season was on 30./31. An official test was held at Silverstone on August 8th.
The race weekend at the Dubai Autodrome , which was scheduled for December in the first published calendar, was probably canceled without replacement in the course of Sheikh Maktum's departure. The event on the Sentul Circuit was then presented from April to December. The Beijing weekend was originally supposed to take place a week earlier. The racing weekend in Brazil planned for mid-March was removed from the racing calendar due to the fact that a free TV broadcast of the series on Brazilian television did not take place during the season.
The race weekend at the Beijing Street Circuit was overshadowed by problems with the track. At the beginning of the first training session, the drivers noticed that the hairpin at the end of the long straight was not manageable even with the steering wheel fully turned , despite the previous route control and approval by the FIA . The session was then interrupted, the second training session canceled and the straight line shortened overnight in order to move the hairpin to a point where a larger curve radius could be guaranteed. However, the curve remained treacherous even after it was relocated, as the cars now approached the pit entrance and the associated boundary wall. After the renovation work had been completed, the third training session took place early on Saturday afternoon, but it also had to be canceled after 25 minutes after a manhole cover had loosened from its anchoring between turns 3 and 4 . The same problem had already occurred in 2004 at the DTM invitation race on the Shanghai Pudong Street Circuit . Since the safety measures took up the afternoon, qualifying could not be carried out, the starting grid for the sprint race was determined by the (interim) result of the third practice session.
Rule changes
The maximum duration of the sprint race has been shortened to 20 minutes and that of the main race has been extended to 70 minutes. The break between the two races was increased to three and a half hours, and the mandatory pit stop in the main race now had to be carried out in a specific time window. The first training session was divided into two 25-minute sessions, which were separated by a ten-minute break, and was now reserved for so-called rookies (“rookie training”). A rookie was initially considered to be a driver who was under the age of 25 and had not competed in more than three A1GP races. The breaks between the individual qualifying segments have been reduced to five minutes; the warm-up was abolished. The starting grid for the main race was now determined by a system that took into account the qualifying result, the result of the sprint race and the fastest race lap, see below. In the sprint race only the first six teams got points according to the 6-5-4-3-2-1 mode, the points awarded in the main race remained unchanged.
After the second race weekend in Brno, extensive changes were made to the rules. The new system for determining the starting order of the main race was replaced by the system from last season after it was criticized for its complexity. The definition of the "rookie" was also changed. He was not older than 27 years and could not have contested more than six races in the A1GP series. In addition, drivers who competed for a “motorsport developing country” - China, Greece, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Pakistan or Singapore - were now entitled to take part in the rookie training.
System for determining the starting order of the main race
In the system, which was only used at the race weekends in Zandvoort and Brno, the starting position, the final position and the placement in the list of the fastest laps in sprint races were converted into points and added up. The team with the fewest points started from pole position in the main race, in the event of a “tie” the finish in the sprint race was decisive.

In German-speaking countries, the pay-TV broadcaster Premiere was still the only one to broadcast the series. Qualifying and the main race were still shown live, the sprint race was now broadcast as a 1: 1 repetition right before the main race.
