The A1 Team New Zealand ( English stylization: A1Team.New Zealand ) was the New Zealand national team in the A1GP series. It was runner-up in the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons .

history

A1 Team New Zealand in Kyalami 2009

The A1 Team New Zealand was founded by Colin Giltrap ; The British team West Surrey Racing acted as racing team in the first season and then the British team DS Motorsport .

In the first season the team was one of the most consistent. After it was able to celebrate its best result of the season with a third place in the sprint race by Matt Halliday at the premiere race weekend at Brands Hatch , it was followed by 14 further places in the points, including five fourth places alone. The team finished the season in fourth place with 77 points.

In the following season the team even managed to improve. It was on pole position for the first time at the race weekend in Brno , but was eliminated after the start due to a collision with Germany's team Nico Hülkenberg . After the first podium of the season, a third place in the sprint race in Sepang , the team with Jonny Reid at the wheel achieved a double victory in Sentul . This was followed by two third places in Taupo at home and two second places in Eastern Creek as well as two third places at the race weekend in Durban by Matt Halliday. Second place in the sprint race in Shanghai was followed by victory in the main race, again by Reid. Eighth place in the main race at Brands Hatch by Halliday finally secured the team the runner-up with 93 points, just ahead of Team Great Britain .

In the third season , too, the team was one of the best. Already at the race weekend in Brno it scored a double victory with Jonny Reid at the wheel, followed by two individual victories in the sprint races in Taupo and Mexico City and two second places in the main race in Zhuhai and in the sprint race in Eastern Creek. The team finished the season again in second place overall with 127 points.

In the fourth season the team weakened a bit. With a second place in the sprint and a third in the main race in Zandvoort as well as a third place in the Sepang sprint race by Earl Bamber , three podiums were achieved in the first part of the season, but similar results were not achieved in the second half. After the last two race weekends had no points, the team finished the season in seventh place overall with 36 points.

A1 Team New Zealand took part in all 39 race weekends of the A1GP series.

Trivia

In the run-up to their home races in Taupo, the team drew attention to itself and the series several times with spectacular actions. In January 2007, for example, Jonny Reid crossed the Auckland Harbor Bridge in the New Zealand A1GP car, known as "Black Beauty" . In January 2008, the team held at the Auckland Airport , an acceleration duel against a Boeing 777 of Air New Zealand . The plane and the A1GP bolide with Reid at the wheel each won one of the two races.
