Nicolas "Nico" Hülkenberg (born August 19, 1987 in Emmerich ) is a German automobile racing driver .
He became champion of the GP2 series in 2009 and made his Formula 1 debut in 2010 . From 2017 to 2019 he competed for Renault . In 2015 he won the Le Mans 24-hour race . His contract with Renault was for 2020 is not extended, but he replaced for two races the meantime to Covid-19 -erkrankten Racing Point pilots Sergio Pérez .
Career
Hülkenberg began his motorsport career at the age of nine with karting . At the age of 15 he won the German junior championship in 2002 with ten victories and a year later (2003) also the German kart championship (DKM).
2005 Hülkenberg joined the Formula racing and went into the German Formula BMW , where he became an instant with eight wins champion. At the subsequent Formula BMW World Final, he came third. In 2006 he started in the German Formula 3 Cup and was there for the first time victorious in his fourth race. In the overall standings, he took fifth place. These achievements helped him to a contract with the German team in the A1GP series, which he led to the title with a total of nine wins in winter 2006/2007 . There was only one event that he did not take part.
The next step in his career was to switch to the Formula 3 Euro Series , in which he competed in 2007 for the French championship team ASM Formule 3 . While his team-mate Romain Grosjean won the championship title, Hülkenberg won four races and finished third overall as the best newcomer behind Grosjean and Sébastien Buemi . He also won the prestigious Formula 3 Masters in Zolder . The Williams Formula 1 team then invited Hülkenberg to test drives in winter 2007/2008. He quickly convinced the British racing team of his abilities and received a test driver contract for the 2008 season .
In addition, Hülkenberg completed another year in the Formula 3 Euro Series for ASM, which had since been renamed the ART Grand Prix , and started the season as one of the title favorites. He met expectations and won the championship title with six wins just one race weekend before the end. On the last race weekend, he finished the season with another victory.
In the following winter of 2008/2009 he started for ART Grand Prix in four races of the GP2 Asia series and finished all races among the best four drivers. Although he had taken part in less than half of the races, he finished sixth overall. In the following season of the GP2 series , which was largely held as part of the Formula 1 supporting program, Hülkenberg stayed at ART Grand Prix and received Pastor Maldonado, an experienced team-mate. After having been on the podium twice, he took the championship lead over his former Formula 3 rival Grosjean at round five at the Nürburgring with two wins, two fastest laps and pole position. With further victories in Budapest , Valencia and Portimão , he won the title and also became the fifth driver in the GP2 series to score at least 100 points in one season. Hülkenberg's greatest competitor, Romain Grosjean, had left the GP2 series prematurely and switched to Formula 1.
After Hülkenberg was also active as a test driver for Williams in 2009 , he was given a regular cockpit in the Williams in 2010, where he became a teammate of Rubens Barrichello . At his third Grand Prix in Malaysia he scored his first world championship point in tenth place. At the Hungarian Grand Prix he achieved his best result of the season in sixth place. At the Brazilian Grand Prix , Hulkenberg achieved his first pole position in Formula 1 in his 18th qualifying. He coped best with the drying track and was over a second ahead of Sebastian Vettel in second place . In the race he failed to defend the leading position. At the start he had to give up the first position to Vettel. Hülkenberg finished in eighth place. In the second half of the season he came in the points several times and finished the season in 14th place in the drivers' world championship. Although he was behind his team-mate in the overall standings, he beat Barrichello several times in the second half of the season.
After the last race of the 2010 season, Hulkenberg announced that he would no longer compete for Williams in the 2011 season . In January 2011 he was signed as a test and reserve driver by Force India for the 2011 season . In this role he took part in some Friday training sessions. For the 2012 season , Hülkenberg was promoted to the regular cockpit at Force India. His teammate became Paul di Resta . He replaced his compatriot Adrian Sutil . After he was eliminated in the first lap at the season opener, he crossed the finish line in ninth place in the second race in Malaysia . At the European Grand Prix he achieved his best result in Formula 1 with fifth place. At the Belgian Grand Prix he exceeded this result with fourth place. At the last race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix , Hulkenberg was leading a few laps in occasional rain. In the duel for the top with Lewis Hamilton there was a collision for which Hülkenberg was given a drive-through penalty. He finally crossed the finish line in fifth place. He finished the season in eleventh place in the drivers' world championship and prevailed against his teammate di Resta with 63 to 46 points.
For the Formula 1 World Championship in 2013 , Hülkenberg moved to Sauber . At the first Grand Prix in Australia , Hulkenberg did not start because of technical problems. In his first start for Sauber in Malaysia , he finally finished eighth. A race later in China , he temporarily led the race. He finished in tenth place. After Hulkenberg never got past tenth place in the next eight races, he finished fifth in Italy . At the Korean Grand Prix , Hulkenberg was once again among the front runners. After keeping Fernando Alonso behind in the first half of the race , he did the same with Hamilton in the second half of the race. Hulkenberg finished fourth. Hülkenberg finished the season in tenth place and clearly prevailed against his team-mate Esteban Gutiérrez with 51 to 6 points .
After a season with Sauber Hulkenberg returned in 2014 back to Force India. He received a two-year contract with the racing team and became Sergio Pérez's teammate . When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose # 27. After finishing sixth at the season opener in Australia , he finished fifth in Malaysia and Bahrain . After this race, Hülkenberg was third in the drivers' championship with 28 points. He achieved two more fifth places in Monaco and Canada . He was ninth overall at the end of the season. Internally, he prevailed against Pérez with 96 to 59 points.
In 2015 , Hülkenberg and Pérez stayed with Force India. With three sixth places as the best results, he internally defeated Pérez with 58 to 78 points and was tenth in the overall standings. In addition to his Formula 1 involvement, Hülkenberg also competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2015 . He competed for Porsche in two races in an additional LMP1 vehicle and made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . He won this race together with Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy . For his sporting achievements in 2015, Hülkenberg was voted German motor sportsman of the year by the ADAC .
In 2016 , Hülkenberg completed another season for Force India. A fourth place at the Belgian Grand Prix was his best result. Internally, he lost again to Pérez with 72 to 101 points. He reached ninth place overall.
Hülkenberg was originally under contract with Force India until the end of 2017 . In October 2016 it was announced that he had terminated his contract with Force India at the end of the year and moved to Renault for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship . There he became a teammate of Jolyon Palmer . At the end of the season he finished tenth overall. In 2018 , Hülkenberg stayed with Renault. At the end of the season he was seventh overall with 69 points and thus achieved his best result so far.
In the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , Hülkenberg completed his third and so far last season for Renault. Towards the middle of the season it became known that his contract with Renault was not being extended and that Nico Hulkenberg would leave the team at the end of the season. The Japanese Grand Prix ended Hulkenberg tenth, but was disqualified due to a protest by Racing Point days. At the end of the season he finished 14th overall with 37 points.
In the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship , he acted as an expert on RTL Formula 1 broadcasts for some races . After his former team-mate Pérez tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the run-up to the 2020 Great Britain Grand Prix , Racing Point signed Hülkenberg as a substitute pilot. However, due to a technical defect, he was unable to take part in the race. After Pérez tested positive again before the Grand Prix of the 70th anniversary , Hülkenberg also replaced him at this Grand Prix, which he finished in seventh. In the run-up to the next race in Spain , however, Perez's Corona test turned out negative, which means that Hülkenberg has to give way again. After the sixth race of the season, he is currently 14th in the drivers' standings with six points.
