report
backgrounds
After the British Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 39 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas and with 87 points ahead of Max Verstappen . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 164 points ahead of Ferrari and with 216 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .
At the German Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.
With Hamilton (four times) and Sebastian Vettel (once) two former winners competed for this Grand Prix. Hamilton won the race once when it was held at the Nürburgring in 2011 , Vettel clinched his only victory to date at the German Grand Prix in 2013 , also at the Nürburgring.
The race stewards were Dennis Dean (USA), Achim Loth (DEU), Tim Mayer (USA) and Derek Warwick (GBR).
free training
In the first free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap time in 1: 14.013 minutes, ahead of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton.
In the second free practice, Leclerc set the fastest time in 1: 13.449 minutes ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Training was briefly interrupted by Pierre Gasly after an accident .
After the second free practice session, the FIA announced that leaving the track in the north curve and the south curve would be severely punished: In practice and qualifying, the lap time was canceled if a vehicle should cross the white line at the edge of the curve with all four tires. In the event of a violation in the race, a time penalty was given. In the past, the drivers used the asphalt run-off zone in these two corners in order to be able to drive through the corners at a higher speed and to take more momentum with them on the following straights.
In the third free practice, Leclerc was again fastest with a lap time of 1: 12.380 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Vettel.
Qualifying
The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Leclerc was the fastest. Vettel did not set a lap time because of a technical problem with the turbocharger's air supply and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. Besides him, the two Williams drivers, Alexander Albon and Lando Norris, retired.
The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. Bottas, Hamilton and Leclerc qualified on the medium mix, all other drivers on the soft mix. Leclerc was again fastest. Lance Stroll , Daniil Kwjat , Daniel Ricciardo , Kevin Magnussen and Antonio Giovinazzi were eliminated.
The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Leclerc was unable to participate in this segment due to a technical problem with the fuel supply on his vehicle and had no time. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 11.767 minutes ahead of Verstappen and Bottas. It was the 87th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship.
Norris was moved to the end of the field, as his vehicle used the third copy of energy storage, control electronics and MGU-K this season. A maximum of two of these components were allowed per season. Vettel was allowed to start the race from the end of the field because he had set sufficiently fast lap times during free practice. He was also relegated to ten starting places, as the third control electronics were used on his vehicle this season.
run
Due to heavy rain, instead of one induction lap, four induction laps were completed behind the safety car . At times it was also not clear whether a normal start would be carried out or whether the race would be started behind the safety car because the safety risk was too high. The race management decided on a normal start.
At the start, Hamilton remained in the lead from Bottas, Verstappen started poorly and lost several positions, so that Kimi Raikkonen was third. Since Nico Hülkenberg pushed Romain Grosjean aside by overtaking on the inside of the hairpin , Carlos Sainz jr . Dodging next to the track, but drove back to the track without damage. Sergio Pérez retired on the second lap because he went off the track at turn eight and collided with the track barrier. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue the vehicle. And half of the drivers used this for a pit stop to switch to intermediates . On the eighth lap, Hamilton, Bottas and Verstappen were able to slowly pull away from the rest of the drivers. Vettel had already improved to eighth place at this point. Daniel Ricciardo had to end the race shortly afterwards with engine problems. In the 17th lap the race management released DRS for the first time. Carlos Sainz Jr. slipped off the track on lap 21 laps, but came to a halt shortly before the track barrier and was able to continue the race.
On lap 24, Vettel was the first driver to switch from intermediates to soft , as the ideal line of the track was getting drier. Two laps later, Verstappen switched to medium . On the following lap he spun 360 degrees between turn twelve and turn 13 . On lap 27, Lando Norris also retired due to engine problems, which is why the virtual safety car was activated. Hamilton and Leclerc also switched from Intermediates to Soft .
When Hamilton left the pit lane again, Leclerc came off the track after a driving error in Turn 13, slipped into the run-off zone and collided with the track barrier. He did not manage to free his vehicle from the gravel bed. The race management sent the safety car out again. Hamilton made the same mistake as Leclerc at turn 13 and also collided with the lane just a few meters away from Leclerc's car. He damaged his front wing and immediately drove back into the pit lane. Since he passed the traffic cone there on the wrong side, he subsequently received a time penalty of five seconds. Since his mechanics were not prepared for this pit stop, the pit stop lasted around 50 seconds. Hamilton fell back three places.
The race was reopened on lap 33. On lap 44, Hülkenberg also got off the track at turn 13 and collided with the track barrier, he also retired. On lap 47, seven of the remaining 15 drivers decided to switch to dry tires again, one lap later another five drivers switched. On lap 53, Lewis Hamilton went off the track again at turn one and spun 360 degrees, but was able to continue. Four laps later, Bottas had an accident at the same point and collided with the barrier. The safety car was sent out again. After the race was reopened, Vettel overtook Lance Stroll and was now third. Pierre Gasly retired after a collision with Alexander Albon . On the penultimate lap of the race, Vettel also overtook Daniil Kwjat .
Verstappen won the race ahead of Vettel and Kwjat. It was the seventh victory for Verstappen in the Formula 1 World Championship. It was the first podium finish for Kwjat since the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix and the first podium finish for Scuderia Toro Rosso since the 2008 Italian Grand Prix . The remaining points were initially occupied by Stroll, Carlos Sainz jr. , Albon, Kimi Raikkonen , Giovinazzi, Romain Grosjean and Magnussen. Since Verstappen had achieved the fastest race lap, he received an additional point.
During the technical inspection of the vehicles after the race, it turned out that the clutches on both Alfa Romeo vehicles did not comply with the regulations. Räikkönen and Giovinazzi were subsequently given a ten-second stop-and-go penalty for violating Article 27.1 of the sporting regulations, which was converted into a time penalty of 30 seconds, and thus fell out of the points. The places seven to ten went to Grosjean, Magnussen, Hamilton and Robert Kubica . It was the first point for the Williams team this season and the first for Kubica since the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix .
The first three places in the drivers 'and constructors' championships remained unchanged.
