Reports
background
Stefan Bellof missed his home Grand Prix because he had to take part in a sports car race at the Mosport International Raceway in Canada due to contractual obligations towards Porsche . Mike Thackwell was supposed to replace him at Hockenheim, but failed to qualify. Toleman competed with only one car driven by Ayrton Senna . The injured Johnny Cecotto was not replaced for the time being because replacement chassis were limited.
training
Alain Prost , who leads the world championship, qualified for pole position in front of Elio de Angelis and the two Renault drivers Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay . Nelson Piquet and Michele Alboreto formed the third row ahead of Niki Lauda and Teo Fabi .
run
Shortly after the start, De Angelis managed to take the lead from Prost, Piquet and the two Renault drivers Warwick and Tambay. Senna followed in sixth place. When on the sixth lap part of the rear paneling of his car came loose and damaged the rear wing, there was an accident at high speed, which the Basilian survived unharmed.
After de Angelis retired on lap eight with engine failure, Prost took the lead, but was overtaken by Piquet on the same lap. Lauda was now in third place. Behind him was Keke Rosberg , who had worked his way up from 19 on the grid within the first nine laps. On lap ten, however, he was eliminated due to an electrical fault and had to leave fourth place to Derek Warwick.
When Piquet had to retire on the 23rd lap due to a gearbox failure, he left a McLaren one- two lead that lasted to the finish. Derek Warwick was third ahead of Nigel Mansell , Patrick Tambay and René Arnoux .
