Reports
background
With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
By far secured Ayrton Senna his seventh pole position of the season ahead of his McLaren -Teamkollegen Alain Prost and the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . This was followed by Nelson Piquet and Alessandro Nannini in the third row.
run
Shortly before the start of the race, the track began to dry up after it had rained in the morning. As a result, some drivers entered the race on slicks . This decision turned out to be a mistake for Nelson Piquet and Philippe Alliot after just a few laps. Both slipped off the track and were eliminated.
Ayrton Senna achieved a start-to-finish victory. Prost, who had fallen behind Berger and Nannini after a bad start, fought his way back up to second place by the twelfth lap, which ultimately resulted in McLaren's sixth double victory in the ninth race of the season. The two Ferrari drivers Berger and Alboreto took third and fourth place ahead of Ivan Capelli and Thierry Boutsen .
