The 1988 Mexican Grand Prix took place in Mexico City on May 29 and was the fourth race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

A new, relatively early date was found for the World Championship run in Mexico in order to be able to use logistical advantages in connection with the two following races in Canada and the USA .

With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Ayrton Senna again prevailed over his teammate Alain Prost in qualifying by setting a lap time that was around six tenths of a second shorter. Gerhard Berger and Nelson Piquet shared the second row in front of their respective teammates Michele Alboreto and Satoru Nakajima .

Philippe Alliot had a spectacular accident which he survived unharmed. Nevertheless, he decided not to take part in the race. Stefano Modena was banned from the race weekend after training because of an illegal rear wing.

run

Prost got off to a better start, allowing him to take the lead from Senna. This was initially overtaken by Piquet, but was able to restore a McLaren double lead before the end of the first lap . In the ninth lap, Berger took third place from Piquet. From then on, nothing changed about this order on the podium until the finish. Piquet lost his fourth place nine laps before the end of the race when he had to retire due to an engine failure. Michele Alboreto achieved fourth place in front of the two Arrows pilots Derek Warwick and Eddie Cheever .
