Reports

background

With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the US Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

As is so often the case this season, the front row was again formed by the two McLaren , but Alain Prost managed to beat his teammate Ayrton Senna for the first time . For the second row, the two qualified Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto in front of both Benetton of Thierry Boutsen and Alessandro Nannini . The fourth row on the grid also consisted of two team-mates, Nelson Piquet and Satoru Nakajima .

Both Ligier pilots failed to qualify in the team's home race of all places.

run

Prost took the lead ahead of Senna, the two Ferraris and the well-started Piquet.

As a result of a pit stop by Prost, Senna took the lead on lap 37. Soon after, he was faced with gearbox problems, so that Prost was able to catch up again, but initially had no opportunity to overtake. This only came about on lap 61 in the course of a lapping maneuver. While Prost drove towards victory, Senna slowed down towards the end of the race because he no longer had all gears available. He nevertheless reached second place ahead of Alboreto, Berger, Piquet and Nannini.

Alain Prost finished his home Grand Prix with a hat trick .
