Reports

background

Nigel Mansell returned to the field of participants after recovering from chickenpox .

training

Alain Prost secured pole position in front of Ayrton Senna , which continued the McLaren dominance in training that had existed throughout the season . Nobody but the two completed a lap at an average speed of more than 200 km / h. Ivan Capelli shared the second row with Gerhard Berger . Maurício Gugelmin in March second qualified for fifth starting position ahead of Nigel Mansell.

run

The first attempt at take-off resulted in an accident because Derek Warwick's engine stalled and Andrea de Cesaris , Luis Pérez-Sala and Satoru Nakajima were unable to avoid the stopped Arrows in time. The race was then canceled with the red flag. For Riccardo Patrese , who was unable to make the first start due to engine problems, this gave him the opportunity to take part in the second start attempt.

Immediately after the restart, Senna and Prost dueled several times for the lead. The Brazilian pushed the French very close to the pit lane at the end of the first lap. However, this defended himself successfully, took the lead and defended this position to the finish. After the race he was very critical of Senna's maneuver.

On the 21st lap, Senna initially fell behind Capelli and shortly afterwards behind Berger. However, this turned out on lap 36 after accidentally pressing a switch to operate the fire extinguisher.

On lap 55, Senna and Mansell collided in a duel for third place when they tried to overtake Jonathan Palmer . Mansell dropped out. Senna had to go to the box for repairs. As a result, Michele Alboreto , Thierry Boutsen, and Derek Warwick pulled past him. On the penultimate lap, Alboreto fell behind Boutsen and Warwick.
