1954 Portuguese Grand Prix
The fourth Grand Prix of Portugal , also II Circuito Internacional de Lisboa (IV Grande Premio do Portugal), Circuito de Monsanto , was announced and held as a sports car race. The event took place on July 25, 1954 and was not part of any racing series.
The race
The history of the Portuguese Grand Prix began in 1951 with a sports car race won by the Portuguese Casimiro de Oliveira in a Ferrari 340 America Berlinetta Vignale . The event was advertised for sports cars until 1957 (there was no race in 1956). 1957 was Juan Manuel Fangio on a plant - Maserati 300S successful.
In 1958 a Formula 1 race was held for the first time under this name. In 1954 the sports cars were still active; The Circuito de Monsanto was chosen as the venue this year . 60 laps had to be covered on the 5.440 km long circuit. Driver changes were not planned.
José Froilán González secured overall victory by eight seconds over his Ferrari team- mate Mike Hawthorn .
