The race

The history of the Portuguese Grand Prix began in 1951 with a sports car race won by the Portuguese Casimiro de Oliveira in a Ferrari 340 America Berlinetta Vignale . The event was advertised for sports cars until 1957 (there was no race in 1956). 1957 was Juan Manuel Fangio on a plant - Maserati 300S successful.

In 1958 a Formula 1 race was held for the first time under this name. In 1954 the sports cars were still active; The Circuito de Monsanto was chosen as the venue this year . 60 laps had to be covered on the 5.440 km long circuit. Driver changes were not planned.

José Froilán González secured overall victory by eight seconds over his Ferrari team- mate Mike Hawthorn .
