The 1984 Portuguese Grand Prix took place on October 21 at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist near Estoril as the 16th and last race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

For the first time since 1960 a Grand Prix of Portugal took place again . For this purpose, the Estoril racetrack, built in 1972, was modernized and adapted to the then current Formula 1 safety standards. The work required for this was only completed shortly before the race weekend.

The field of participants consisted of 27 drivers, as the Renault team gave its French test driver Philippe Streiff the opportunity to make his Grand Prix debut at the wheel of a third works car.

Teo Fabi , whose father died a few days before the race, did not take part in the season finale. He was represented at Brabham by Manfred Winkelhock .

training

Since it was raining during the first qualifying session on Friday, all the pilots achieved their respective best times on Saturday.

For the third time in a row, the front row consisted of the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost , the runner-up in the then current World Championship standings. Ayrton Senna qualified for third place on the grid, ahead of Keke Rosberg and the two Lotus drivers Elio de Angelis and Nigel Mansell .

Niki Lauda , who was 3.5 points ahead of Prost in the World Championship ranking , finished eleventh on the grid.

run

Shortly after the start, Prost passed the relatively poorly started Piquet, but had to admit defeat to Rosberg and Mansell before the first corner. During the second lap, however, he regained second place. In the ninth lap he finally passed Rosberg and took the lead. Meanwhile, Lauda fought his way through the field of pursuit. His race to catch up brought him up to seventh place by lap 18.

Rosberg had meanwhile dropped to fourth place behind Mansell and Senna. Between the 26th and 33rd lap, Lauda made up another four positions and caught up with second-placed Mansell. When he spun on lap 51 due to a brake defect, Lauda took second place, which was enough for him to win the title despite the victory of his teammate. Ayrton Senna was third ahead of Michele Alboreto , Elio de Angelis and Nelson Piquet.

Niki Lauda secured his third world title with the narrowest lead in Formula 1 history of half a point over his team-mate Alain Prost.

The McLaren team , which by then had been the Constructors' World Champion in 1984 for several weeks, ended the season with the fourth one-two of the year. At the end of the season, the team had more than twice as many championship points to book as the second-placed Scuderia Ferrari .
