The 1984 San Marino Grand Prix took place on May 6th at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari and was the fourth race of the 1984 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the new Arrows A7 with BMW -Turbomotor during the Grand Prix of Belgium of Thierry Boutsen was used for the first time, has now received His teammate Marc Surer the opportunity to test the car in the race.
As an exception, Osella used a second car. In addition to the FA1F of the regular driver Piercarlo Ghinzani , an FA1E with a conventional naturally aspirated engine was reported for the Austrian debutant Jo Gartner .
training
After the Goodyear tires had proven to be superior during practice in Zolder the previous weekend, two Michelin drivers, Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost , qualified for the first two starting positions in Imola . Keke Rosberg , equipped with Goodyear tires, followed in third place in front of Derek Warwick , Niki Lauda , René Arnoux , Manfred Winkelhock and Eddie Cheever .
Both qualification training sessions took place in damp weather conditions. However, since the track dried up over the course of Saturday, most of the drivers undercut their previous best times during the final phase of the last training session.
A dispute between Team Toleman and the tire supplier Pirelli before the first qualifying session and engine problems during the second round meant that Ayrton Senna failed to qualify for a Grand Prix for the first and only time in his Formula 1 career.
run
Prost managed to take the lead shortly after the start from Piquet. Rosberg and Lauda fell behind during the first lap, so Warwick finished third in front of Arnoux and Winkelhock. On the Tosa curve, Patrick Tambay collided with Eddie Cheever and was eliminated. Due to a tire damage as a result of the collision, Cheever had to head for the pits, but after changing tires he was able to continue the race lying in last place.
In the third lap, Manfred Winkelhock fell behind Michele Alboreto . By the eleventh lap, Lauda came back up to sixth place. Two laps later he was in fourth place after overtaking Alboreto and Arnoux, but retired on lap 16 due to an engine failure.
On lap 22 Warwick briefly took second place from Piquet before Piquet successfully countered on lap 26. While these two drivers completed the race without a pit stop, Prost had his tires changed in the meantime. However, he led so confidently that he consistently defended his top position despite the stop. Arnoux, who was also running on new tires, was able to take advantage of their advantages in the second half of the race by overtaking Warwick on lap 40. When Piquet had to give up on lap 49 due to damage to the turbocharger , the Frenchman finished second.
Warwick lost two more positions to Andrea de Cesaris and Elio de Angelis during rounds 50 and 51 . Both retired due to a lack of fuel towards the end of the race, with de Cesaris being classified as third behind Prost and Arnoux due to the distance covered. Warwick took fourth place ahead of Stefan Bellof and Thierry Boutsen after Eddie Cheever was also left without fuel on lap 58.
When the Tyrrell team was excluded from the World Championship towards the end of the season, all the pilots who had reached the finish line after Stefan Bellof moved up one place. Thus, Andrea de Cesaris subsequently received a World Championship point.
