run
The start was not good for the McLaren drivers on the first two starting positions and they were overtaken by Ralf Schumacher directly. Also JT improved by two positions and joined on three position between Coulthard and Häkkinen a. After the first lap, Ralf Schumacher was in front of Coulthard, Trulli, Häkkinen, Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya .
In the first laps the two leaders pulled away from the third-placed Trulli. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher had brief problems with his Ferrari and fell behind Montoya, Olivier Panis and Barrichello. The problems did not recur afterwards, so that Schumacher was able to set the same lap times as his teammate in front of him. Meanwhile, the latter put pressure on the Panis driving in front of him and finally overtook him on the seventh lap. On the following lap, Michael Schumacher also managed to overtake Panis.
At the top of the field, the rankings remained unchanged. Ralf Schumacher and Coulthard continuously separated themselves from Trulli, behind whom the pursuers piled up one after the other. After a few laps, the chasing group consisted of Trulli, Häkkinen, Montoya, Barrichello and Schumacher.
While Ralf Schumacher pulled away from Coulthard a little, Kimi Raikkonen dropped out due to a broken steering. On lap 20, Schumacher's Ferrari suffered a tire damage and had to slowly drive into the pit lane. There they changed the tire and sent it back to the racetrack. Shortly afterwards, however, Schumacher had to give up the race because part of the suspension had come loose.
On lap 24, Trulli was the first driver in the leading group to initiate the pit stop phase. He was followed three laps later by Montoya, who overtook Trulli due to three faster laps - Häkkinen did the same. Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher also pitted. Ralf Schumacher, who stayed one lap longer on the track, increased his lead over Coulthard from five to eight seconds. Barrichello was the last of the top 6 to pit. His pit stop just before halfway through the race was shorter than that of his rivals and he came back on track before Häkkinen.
After the first pit stops, Ralf Schumacher was leading ahead of Coulthard, Barrichello, Häkkinen and Montoya.
With 18 laps to go, it was Coulthard who was the first driver of the top teams to make the final pit stop. He was followed one lap later by Ralf Schumacher, who didn't lose the lead. The other drivers also pitted for the last time. At Montoya there were problems driving off, the engine of the Williams stopped for a short time. After more than a minute, Montoya was able to leave the pits again, but had to give up the race on the same lap with a gearbox failure.
Nothing at the top positions changed until the end of the race. Ralf Schumacher took his first Formula 1 victory in his 70th Grand Prix. Coulthard was second ahead of Barrichello. The remaining points went to Häkkinen, Trulli and Frentzen.
Coulthard caught up six points on Schumacher in the world championship, so that both were now tied. However, Schumacher retained the lead.
