The Jordan EJ11 was the Formula 1 - racing cars of Jordan Grand Prix for the 2001 season . Like its predecessor, the Jordan EJ10 , it was a completely new development and the eleventh vehicle in the Jordan Grand Prix in Formula 1. It was also the first Jordan car to have a Honda engine .
General
After the rather disappointing 2000 season, in which only 17 points could be achieved despite a completely new vehicle, the final breakthrough should come in 2001 with the EJ11 and the team should regularly reach the top again as in 1999. To this end, a completely new vehicle was developed, which no longer had in common with the previous models. The most striking change was the use of a pointed, high vehicle nose and a front wing attached by two struts inclined at about 45 °. This construction was reminiscent of a similar solution that the Tyrrell team had already used with the Tyrrell 020 in the 1991 Formula 1 season . In addition, the team now received motorization directly from Honda , which the rivalry to the also Honda-motorized and z. The British American Racing team, which was already seen as a works team, was strengthened.
In the preseason tests, everything initially seemed to be going better than planned. The EJ11 proved to be very fast and was able to achieve record times with other teams in many test runs. Heinz-Harald Frentzen described the EJ11 as the best vehicle that he had ever driven and underlined his ambitions for the championship title with it. His team-mate Jarno Trulli was also very optimistic about the future. As in 1999, many saw the Jordan Grand Prix as the third force behind Ferrari and McLaren Racing .
During the season, however, disillusionment returned. Although the EJ11 was very fast in qualifying and was often in the points, podium positions were also a long way off due to the unexpectedly stronger Williams-BMW vehicles. After both drivers were able to regularly score 6th, 5th or 4th in the first third of the season, a series of failures set in. The esteemed Heinz-Harald Frentzen seemed increasingly lacking in motivation, which increased the tension between him and Eddie Jordan. Jarno Trulli also had more points than the German and mostly qualified better than him. This ultimately culminated in Frentzen's dismissal before the German Grand Prix. Ricardo Zonta , who had already represented Frentzen at the Canadian Grand Prix , started in his place . From the Hungarian Grand Prix , Jean Alesi was signed by Prost Grand Prix , who, with his experience, should lead the team back to the top. Frentzen took over from the French at Prost. But even with the new driver duo, Jordan remained trapped in the midfield without points. Only in Belgium could Jean Alesi collect points as 6th and in the USA Jarno Trulli as 4th. Frentzen sensationally qualified in 4th place in the Prost in Belgium, but stalled the engine at the start and was thus forced to return to the bottom of the field.
At the end of the season, Jordan was fifth in the championship with 19 points, a long way from podium places, victories or even world championship titles. Trulli, six Frentzen and one Alesi reached twelve of them. The previous year's susceptibility to errors with the Jordan EJ10 had not improved with the new EJ11 either and destroyed many better results and even podium places. The EJ11 suffered in particular from defective supplier parts and problems with the engine cooling. The latter could not be developed sufficiently because Honda did not deliver the new unit until January, when the main development of the vehicle had already been completed.
technology
Newcomer Eghbal Hamidy was the technical director of vehicle development . He was supported by chief aerodynamicist John Iley and chief designer Tim Holloway . A total of 247 engineers worked on the new vehicle. The further development of the previous year's car had already been stopped in August 2000 in order to concentrate all resources on the EJ11. As in the previous year, the team used Elf Aquitaine petrol and Bridgestone tires . The brakes were also purchased from Brembo again .
In contrast to previous years, Jordan now used a self-developed seven-speed gearbox with an additional reverse gear from its own development and engine from Honda . The Japanese company provided the Honda RA001E, which was also used by British American Racing in the BAR 003 . The engine developed 830 in qualifying and under racing conditions between 795 and 815 hp at up to 17,900 and 17,500 revolutions per minute, respectively. The RA001E was a ten cylinder with a cylinder bank angle of 80 °. Each individual cylinder had four valves. The Honda PGM-FI system was used as the injection system - the Honda PGM-IG as the ignition system. Spark plugs were obtained from NGK Spark Plug . The total weight of the unit including additional parts was 98 kg.
Sponsors and liveries
As in previous years, the basic color of the car was yellow; The front and rear wings, T-Cam and side pods were black. The main sponsor remained the tobacco brand Benson & Hedges , which advertised on both wings, the nose, the side pods and on the driver's helmets. Other sponsors were the credit card company Mastercard , Deutsche Post , engine supplier Honda , Infineon , DHL and a few small sponsors.
In countries where the advertising of tobacco products was not allowed, the lettering Benson & Hedges was replaced by "Bitten Heroes" (English for "Bitten Heroes"). This was an allusion to the stylized drawing of a shark on the vehicle nose , which had replaced the hornet shown since 1998 and the associated lettering "Buzzin 'Hornets" (English for "Humming Hornets").
In response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the team drove in Italy and the USA with a large American flag on the air scoop. In addition, Jean Alesi drove in Indianapolis with the inscription "200" on the side pods - an allusion to the fact that this was his 200th GP overall. As 7th, he just missed points there.
driver
Heinz-Harald Frentzen remained the first driver for the 2001 season. He got the start number 11. Jarno Trulli also stayed in the team as a second driver. He started with number 12. The test driver was Ricardo Zonta , a Brazilian from British American Racing . Before the German Grand Prix, team boss Eddie Jordan fired the demotivated Heinz-Harald Frentzen and replaced him with Ricardo Zonta, who had already represented the German in Canada. After the German GP, Eddie Jordan contacted Jean Alesi whether he wanted to start for him. The Frenchman agreed and drove the EJ11 as the second driver from the Hungarian Grand Prix. Trulli was promoted to first driver. Prost team boss Alain Prost , however, hired the now unemployed Heinz-Harald Frentzen for his team.
Trulli remained the main supplier of points in the 2001 season and won a total of twelve of them. Frentzen was able to achieve six during his time with the EJ11, Alesi still another one in Belgium. At the end of the season, Jean Alesi retired, Jarno Trulli joined Renault F1 and Frentzen joined Arrows due to the bankruptcy of the Prost team . For the 2002 season, Jordan signed the Japanese Takuma Sato and the Italian Giancarlo Fisichella , who swapped places with Trulli. Ricardo Zonta remained a test driver.
