Reports
background
After the San Marino Grand Prix , Michael Schumacher led the drivers' standings with equal points from David Coulthard . Third in the overall standings was Rubens Barrichello , twelve points behind. In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was 10 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and 28 points over Williams-BMW .
Luciano Burti switched from Jaguar to Prost for this Grand Prix . At Prost he replaced Gastón Mazzacane . His Jaguar cockpit was taken over by Pedro de la Rosa , who had been a regular Arrows driver in the 2000 season and did not start at the first four events in 2001.
With Mika Häkkinen (three times), Michael Schumacher (twice) and Jacques Villeneuve (once), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
The first free training consisted of two sessions, each lasting one hour, without separate timing. Here Coulthard drove the fastest lap ahead of Eddie Irvine and Barrichello. In the second training session, which consisted of two 45-minute sessions, Michael Schumacher set the best time, ahead of his teammates Barrichello and Coulthard.
Qualifying
Michael Schumacher was fastest in qualifying and secured the 36th pole position of his career. Hakkinen was 85 thousandths of a second slower in second. Third was Coulthard.
Warm up
In the warm-up on Sunday morning, Barrichello was the fastest driver in front of McLaren drivers Häkkinen and Coulthard.
run
When starting in the formation lap , the McLaren of Coulthard stopped. Only after the entire field had passed him was Coulthard allowed to start the car again and start the race from last place.
Michael Schumacher kept the lead over Häkkinen after the start. Heinz-Harald Frentzen started badly and lost many places. In the first corner there was contact between Coulthard and Enrique Bernoldi , during which Coulthard lost his front wing and Bernoldi damaged a tire. Both then had to pit.
After one lap, Michael Schumacher led ahead of Häkkinen, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher , Jarno Trulli and Juan Pablo Montoya .
In the first laps the two leaders drove away from the field; behind it the gaps grew larger. Frentzen, who was trying to make up his lost positions, collided with de la Rosa on lap seven. After that, the race was over for both drivers.
On the 20th lap Ralf Schumacher spun, got stuck with his car in the gravel bed and was eliminated. At the same time, the first phase of the pit stops began. Montoya and Trulli, who were close together, came into the box at the same time. Montoya was processed more quickly and left the pit lane in front of Trulli, who came back onto the track behind Jean Alesi , who was still driving without stopping , and thus lost time.
On lap 23 Michael Schumacher came to the pits to refuel and change tires. Despite the higher weight due to the additional fuel, Schumacher managed to set faster lap times than Häkkinen. When he drove to his first pit stop five laps later, the lead over Schumacher was not enough and Häkkinen was second again.
Halfway through the race, Michael Schumacher was leading ahead of Häkkinen, Barrichello, Montoya, Villeneuve and Trulli.
In the further course, Schumacher and Häkkinen continued to break away.
Michael Schumacher pits for his last stop on lap 44 and the lead went to Häkkinen, who in turn pits six laps later. This time, however, the lead over Schumacher was enough for Häkkinen to keep the lead. Meanwhile, Barrichello had problems with his racing car. After being out of the track and making an unscheduled pit stop, he finished the race and parked his vehicle in the pit with a damaged suspension.
Michael Schumacher also had problems with his Ferrari. Since his pit stop he has not driven as fast as before. He later cited strong vibrations as the reason. However, since the gap to Montoya was more than a minute, it did not cost him any position.
With five laps to go, Coulthard overtook Nick Heidfeld and was thus in the points despite starting from last position.
On the last lap, while in the lead, Häkkinen suddenly dropped out with a damaged clutch, but was still classified in ninth place due to lapping.
Michael Schumacher won ahead of Montoya and Villeneuve. The remaining points went to Trulli, Coulthard and Heidfeld.
On the lap in the parc fermé, Coulthard stopped at the retired Häkkinen and drove him back to the paddock.
