Reports
background
During the four-week break between the Grand Prix of South Africa and the next World Championship round in Spain, James Hunt surprised the professional world with a victory at the BRDC International Trophy in Silverstone , which is not part of the World Championship .
In addition to the usual participants in the season so far, two new teams have been registered for the Spanish Grand Prix. On the one hand there was Chris Amon , who competed for the first time with his own vehicle under the team name Chris Amon Racing and on the other hand the Trojan team, which was created with the support of Ron Tauranac and was registered with Tim Schenken as driver. Tyrrell first reported a copy of the new 007 model for Jody Scheckter .
At Shadow , Brian Redman was hired to replace the fatally injured Peter Revson . Brabham boss Bernie Ecclestone decided to replace the paydriver Richard Robarts with the more financially strong Rikky from Opel . As a result, Team Ensign Racing lost its only driver at the time and therefore did not compete.
training
Niki Lauda secured pole position for the second time in a row by only three hundredths of a second short of the fastest time set by Ronnie Peterson during Friday training on Saturday . His team-mate, World Championship leader Clay Regazzoni , qualified for third place on the grid ahead of McLaren driver Emerson Fittipaldi . Jacky Ickx shared the third row with Carlos Reutemann .
The training session was overshadowed by a serious accident involving the Italian Vittorio Brambilla , which he survived unharmed but had to forego the race.
run
Rain on the day of the race caused a lot of spray behind the vehicles, so that at the beginning of the race only the leader Peterson had a clear view. The order of the pursuers Lauda, Regazzoni, Ickx and Fittipaldi remained the same for several laps at the beginning, whereby Fittipaldi had problems with misfiring, the effects of which only became noticeable when Scheckter overtook him on the 11th lap on a drying track almost without a fight.
A little later, some drivers headed for their pits to switch to dry tires. Shortly afterwards, Ickx dropped out due to a brake defect caused by an inadequately secured wheel. His team mate Peterson also had to give up due to a technical defect, so that the Lotus team had its second total failure in a row.
As a result, Niki Lauda led before Clay Regazzoni, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Arturo Merzario . He had a serious accident on lap 38, where he landed his car beyond the barriers right next to a group of photographers. No one was harmed by luck alone.
Six laps before the scheduled end, the race was stopped after two hours had elapsed. Niki Lauda achieved his first Grand Prix victory, which was upgraded to a Ferrari double victory by Clay Regazzoni . Stuck, who showed a strong performance and had been on the podium for a long time, was overtaken by Fittipaldi in the last third of the race.
