After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with ten points ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and 27 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 16 points ahead of Lotus-Renault and with 32 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions . The P Zero Hard mixture was modified in the run-up to the Grand Prix. In addition, there was a set of a new mix for the Friday training sessions.

With Raikkonen (twice), Fernando Alonso , Felipe Massa , Jenson Button , Mark Webber , Vettel and Pastor Maldonado (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Paul Gutjahr (CHE), Alan Jones (AUS) and Roger Peart (CAN).

training

At the beginning of the first free practice session, the track was wet and it was raining lightly. In the course of training, the track dried up and the drivers switched to slicks. Alonso set the fastest time ahead of his Ferrari teammates Massa and Jean-Éric Vergne . In this training, Heikki Kovalainen took over the Caterham from Charles Pic and Rodolfo González took over the Marussia from Max Chilton . Button did not complete a timed lap. In the second free practice session the track was dry. Vettel was the fastest pilot ahead of Alonso and Webber. Most of the teams tested updates of their vehicles. In the third free practice session, Massa took the lead from Raikkonen and Webber.

After the training sessions, Ferrari's technical director Pat Fry was hospitalized with appendicitis .

Qualifying

In the first part of qualifying, Hamilton was the fastest driver. The Caterham, Marussia and Williams pilots were eliminated. In the second segment, Hamilton stayed ahead. The Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Button and Adrian Sutil were eliminated. In the last part, Rosberg took the lead and achieved pole position in front of Hamilton and Vettel.

Following qualifying, Esteban Gutiérrez and Massa were each moved three positions back on the grid because they had obstructed an opponent. Gutiérrez in the first section Raikkonen and Massa in the second section Webber.

run

Pole setter Rosberg drove a relatively slow warm-up lap, so that the third-placed Vettel complained about him. At the start, Rosberg stayed in the lead. Vettel went past Hamilton into second position. Shortly thereafter, Hamilton lost another position to Alonso, whose teammate Massa had passed Sergio Pérez to sixth place on the first lap . In the next laps there were no overtaking maneuvers in the leading group and the drivers began to take care of their tires. In the seventh lap, Raikkonen also passed Hamilton and finally caught up with the leading trio. One lap later, Massa also passed Hamilton. Massa then pitted first in the leading group.

While Romain Grosjean gave up with a defective rear suspension, the rest of the leading group made their pit stops and switched from the softer to the harder mixture. In the meantime Gutiérrez took the lead. Rosberg initially stayed ahead of his opponents. Alonso managed to drive past Vettel at the stop. He put pressure on Rosberg in the next laps and finally passed him on the 13th lap. Rosberg was also overtaken by Vettel and Massa on this lap. Since Gutiérrez had pitted in the meantime, Alonso took over the lead of the race.

While the Mercedes drivers Rosberg and Hamilton gradually fell behind, Alonso took the lead. In the 21st lap, the phase of the second pit stops by Massa began. Alonso followed a lap later, so that Vettel took the lead. The two Ferrari drivers drove fast laps on the new tires, while Giedo van der Garde lost the left rear wheel and finally gave up at the pits. Van der Garde had previously noticed that his bike was not properly attached, but was instructed by his racing team to go back to the pits, even though this was a violation of the regulations. After Vettel was also in the pits, Raikkonen led briefly. However, Alonso caught up with him. However, there was no overtaking maneuver on the track, as Raikkonen pitted.

Alonso took the lead in the following laps. Massa was in second place, while Vettel and Räikkönen dueled for third place. On the 33rd lap, Raikkonen finally managed to drive past Vettel. However, he was already about 20 seconds behind Alonso. Shortly afterwards, the drivers who were planning a four-stop strategy made their third stop. Raikkonen, who was on a three-stop strategy, stayed outside and briefly took the lead. Alonso, who had new tires, overtook him after just a few laps. At the stops, however, there was a collision between Vergne and Nico Hülkenberg , who was given the signal too early to continue. Hülkenberg damaged his front wing in the process and had to pit again for a repair stop. He was also given a stop-and-go penalty. Shortly thereafter, Vergne suffered a tire damage as a result of the collision and pitted to stop repairs. He resumed the race but gave up in the pits a little later.

Raikkonen pitted for the last time on lap 46. In doing so, he fell behind Massa. Alonso made his final stop on lap 50 and this time had such a big lead that he kept the lead over Massa. Alonso preferred this stop because he had a creeping flat tire. Shortly thereafter, Massa pitted, again swapping positions with Raikkonen. While the drivers at the front drove a little slower on the final laps, Gutiérrez achieved the fastest race lap.

Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix for the second time in his career after 2006 ahead of Raikkonen and Massa. It was Massa's only podium finish in the 2013 season and also his last for Scuderia Ferrari. Vettel was fourth, Webber fifth. Pole setter Rosberg crossed the finish line in sixth place. The top 10 were completed by Paul di Resta , Button, Pérez and Daniel Ricciardo . Hamilton, who started from second place, finished the race in twelfth place. Alonso, who started from fifth place, won the Formula 1 race for the first time since 1996 at the Circuit de Catalunya who did not start the race from the front row. In addition, fifth place is the worst starting place for a Formula 1 winner on this track.

At the Spanish Grand Prix, the tires were heavily used, so that most drivers pitted four times and all drivers had to spare the tires. The biggest difference in performance compared to qualifying was with the Mercedes drivers.

In the drivers' world championship, the first two positions remained unchanged. Alonso took third place from Hamilton. In the constructors' category, Ferrari passed Lotus in second place.

Comments from the first three drivers

“Even if this is the third time I've won a home race, the emotions are still very high, as if this had never happened before. It's nice to be able to present this victory to all of Spain, especially at a time when the country is in crisis for many people. It is not possible for them to come here to support us. I thank everyone for their support and the team for doing a fantastic job.
After a far from easy qualifying, everything went perfectly, the start, the strategy, the pit stops and the management of the tires. At the start I had to make up a few places, after overtaking half the straight there was no more room for it. So I turned KERS off so I could use it into the third corner. After watching the GP2 race, I realized that it is possible to attack from outside there.
We had to bring the last stop forward as there was a creeping flat tire that meant that the right rear wheel lost pressure in the last part of the lap. Fortunately, this didn't affect the bottom line.
I believe that we can fight for the world championship with this car because we finished second in five races and had two wins. From now on we have to show a consistent performance and get as many points as possible because we are all aware that we are not the fastest. To change that, a lot of people work on the track and in Maranello day and night. "

- Fernando Alonso

“Unfortunately it's second place again, so it's not time to celebrate so much. The car felt good and we pretty much gave our all today but didn't have the speed to challenge Fernando.
I drove to the maximum and it is good for the championship that Sebastian crossed the finish line behind us. It's nice for me and the team to be on the podium. Let's see what we can achieve in Monaco. "

- Kimi Raikkonen

“I am very satisfied with this podium. It was a really nice and fantastic result for the team. If you start from far behind, things are even more difficult, but I managed to get around well and immediately had fantastic speed.
During the first lap, thanks to the fact that the car was very competitive, I did a couple of overtaking maneuvers, which meant that I could be aggressive while being careful with the tires.
Until the end, I thought that it would be possible to fight Kimi. But when we put on the last set of hard tires, the ones we thought would be the best since they were new, I had oversteer and started losing the rear much sooner than I expected.
At the same time, I'm very satisfied with our performance on this track. Now we are on our way to Monaco, a completely different route where overtaking is very difficult. We know we don't have the fastest car, but all we can do is keep working hard with the same effort because I'm sure we are working in the right direction. "

- Felipe Massa
