The 2015 Spanish Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Gran Premio De España Pirelli 2015 ) took place on May 10th at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló and was the fifth race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Bahrain Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by 27 points over Nico Rosberg and 28 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 52 points ahead of Ferrari and with 98 points ahead of Williams .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (orange) and P Zero Medium (white), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were some changes to the route compared to last year. Since the surveillance cameras hardly gave any information about the exact course of Fernando Alonso's accident during the test drives before the season, an additional camera was installed at the exit of the Renault , and the openings for the rescue vehicles in the boundary walls outside in the following Repsol curve were enlarged. At the exit of the Campsa the curbs started much earlier, at the exit of the chicane before the last corner the curbs were renewed. In the target curve called New Holland , two additional rows of tire stacks have been added.

The two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The measuring point for the first zone was 86 meters in front of the Campsa , the zone began 40 meters after the curve. The measuring point for the second DRS zone, which was on the start-finish straight, was the safety car line, the DRS was then allowed to be activated 157 meters after the New Holland .

After Vettel had an accident with Sergio Pérez during free practice at the Bahrain Grand Prix because of an incorrectly attached front wheel , the FIA tightened the rules for such a case in advance of the race. If a driver does not immediately park the vehicle at the edge of the track during training, if one of the wheels is not correctly attached, he will be moved backwards on the starting grid for the race. In the race, this behavior results in a ten-second penalty and a fine is payable. If a vehicle loses a wheel, the driver will be put back ten starting positions in the coming race.

Marcus Ericsson , Pastor Maldonado (five each), Pérez (four), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg and Roberto Merhi (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Kimi Raikkonen , Alonso (twice each), Felipe Massa , Button, Vettel, Maldonado and Hamilton (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Garry Connelly (AUS), David Domingo (ESP), Alan Jones (AUS) and Tim Mayer (USA).

Hamilton was the fastest. The Manor pilots, the Force India pilots and Ericsson were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg was the fastest. Felipe Nasr , the McLaren drivers and the Lotus drivers did not make it into the last part of the timed practice.

Rosberg won the race ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was Rosberg's first win of the season and his first win since the 2014 Brazilian Grand Prix . For Mercedes it was the third double victory of the year. The top 10 were completed by Valtteri Bottas , Räikkönen, Massa, Ricciardo, Grosjean, Carlos Sainz jr. and Daniil Kwjat .

In the drivers' standings, Rosberg was able to reduce the gap to Hamilton, Vettel stayed in third place. In the constructors' championship, the first three positions remained unchanged, and Mercedes was able to further extend its lead.
