Romain Grosjean (born April 17, 1986 in Geneva ) is an automobile racing driver of French - Swiss origin. In 2009 he took part in seven Formula 1 races. He has been a regular Formula 1 driver since the 2012 World Cup. From 2008 to 2011 he drove in the GP2 series , in which he won the championship title in 2011. He is also two-time champion of the GP2 Asia series ( 2008 and 2011 ) and one-time champion of the Formula 3 Euro series ( 2007 ) and the Auto GP ( 2010 ).

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (2000–2007)

Grosjean began his motorsport career in karting in 2000 , where he was active until 2002. Among other things, he won the French ICA Kart Championship in 2001. In 2003 he moved into the single-seater racing and won the same in its debut year, the Swiss Formula Renault 1600 and Formula Lista junior . In 2004 Grosjean switched to SG Formula and competed in the French Formula Renault, in which he finished seventh overall with a win, and in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup , in which he was 15th. In 2005 Grosjean stayed with SG Formula in both racing series. While he achieved twelfth place in the overall standings in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, he dominated the French Formula Renault championship with 10 victories from 16 races. The Renault - Formula 1 team then took him into his funding.

In 2006 he received a cockpit in the Formula 3 Euro Series at the French Racing team Signature-Plus . With a third place in Oschersleben , he was once on the podium. At the end of the season he was behind his teammates Guillaume Moreau and Charlie Kimball , who finished tenth and eleventh, 13th. He also took part as a guest starter in two races of the British Formula 3 championship and came first in both races. In 2007 Grosjean moved to the ASM Formule 3 racing team , which had already secured the championship title in previous years with Jamie Green , Lewis Hamilton and Paul di Resta . With six wins and eleven points ahead of his closest rival Sébastien Buemi , Grosjean became the first French to win the championship title of this series.

GP2 series (2008-2009)

Grosjean in the GP2-Dallara of ART Grand Prix, 2008

At the end of 2007, Renault confirmed Grosjean as the official test driver for the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship . He was also signed for the 2008 GP2 series by ART Grand Prix, for whose Formula 3 team ASM he had won the Formula 3 Euro Series a year earlier . First he started for ART Grand Prix in the first season of the GP2 Asia series . As a team-mate of Stephen Jelley , he won four races and was the overall winner with 24 points ahead of his former Formula 3 rival Buemi.

In the main series of GP2 , Grosjean stood on the podium six times and won the sprint race in Istanbul and the main race in Spa-Francorchamps . Since his teammate Luca Filippi , who already had GP2 experience, was unable to keep up with him, Grosjean was ultimately partly responsible for the replacement of Filippi by Sakon Yamamoto , who was just as unable to compete with Grosjean. Grosjean scored 62 points and was fourth in the overall standings, just two points behind runner-up Bruno Senna .

Also in 2009 Grosjean initially competed in the GP2 series, but switched from Vitali Petrow to Barwa Addax as a teammate . After Grosjean had started the season well and was leading the championship, he fell behind Nico Hulkenberg after a few races in which he remained without points and took second place in the championship after six race weekends. At the end of the season he finished fourth overall, even though he hadn't been there for the last four race weekends.

Formula 1 (2009)

Grosjean during training for the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix

As early as July 2009, there was speculation about Grosjean's promotion to Formula 1 after rumors about the separation of the Renault team from their driver Nelson Piquet jr. had given. At the end of July Piquet was actually fired and on August 18 Grosjean, who had previously worked as a Renault test driver, was hired as the new driver. He made his debut on August 23 at the European Grand Prix in Valencia as a team-mate of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso . Grosjean started in the last seven races of the season, but never made it into the top 10. With a 13th place at the Brazilian Grand Prix as the best result, he remained without points, while Alonso collected 13 world championship points during this period and was third on the podium once. For the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship , Grosjean was replaced by his former GP2 teammate Petrov and was not given a cockpit in Formula 1.

Auto GP, FIA GT1 World Championship, GP2 Series (2010–2011)

In 2010 Grosjean moved to the newly founded FIA GT1 World Championship . In the 2010 season he started with a Ford GT1 . For the Swiss racing team Matech Competition he took part in the first five events of this championship under the Swiss flag. He won two races with Thomas Mutsch . At the end of the season, he finished eleventh in the drivers' championship. He also made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans .

Grosjean initially returned to formula racing via the Auto GP . Grosjean competed for the French DAMS team and won his first race in this championship. Although he did not take part in the first two race weekends of the 2010 season , he won the championship title with a total of four victories one race before the end of the season. At the GP2 race weekend in Hockenheim , Grosjean surprisingly made his comeback in this racing series. The DAMS team decided to use the experienced driver on a race weekend to find out why the duo Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Ho-Pin Tung showed so little. Without having completed test drives, Grosjean showed in an impressive way that the poor performance of the DAMS team was not due to the racing car and presented the team's potential in both races with overtaking maneuvers and fast lap times. On three other race weekends, this time as a replacement for the injured Tung, he was used again for DAMS in the GP2 series and achieved two third places. At the end of the season he finished 14th overall. Grosjean also completed test drives with the new Formula 1 tires for the tire manufacturer Pirelli .

Romain Grosjean in the GP2 series in Monza 2011

In 2011, Grosjean stayed with DAMS in the GP2 series. First he competed in the 2011 GP2 Asia Series season . He achieved pole position in both races and won one race in Imola . At the end of the season, which comprised four races, Grosjean won the championship title of the GP2 Asia Series for the second time with 24 to 18 points ahead of his compatriot Jules Bianchi . Grosjean started the GP2 series in 2011 with a win in Istanbul. After a bad qualifying for the third race weekend in Monte Carlo , he had to start the main race from last place on the grid. Grosjean showed an impressive performance and improved to fourth place through overtaking maneuvers and pit strategy. Further victories followed in Valencia, Silverstone , Nürburg and Mogyoród . Three races before the end of the season he secured the championship title of the GP2 series at Spa-Francorchamps. Grosjean was on the podium a total of ten times. In addition, he was again a test driver for the Renault Formula 1 team.

Formula 1 (since 2012)

Lotus F1 Team (2012-2015)

In 2012 Grosjean returned to Formula 1 as a regular driver. He received a contract with the Lotus F1 Team , for whose predecessor team, the Renault works team, he made his debut in 2009. At Lotus he became a team-mate of the former world champion Kimi Räikkönen and replaced Vitali Petrow, his former GP2 team-mate. At the season opener in Australia , Grosjean qualified the car in third place. His race was over after just one lap after a collision. In the second race he also retired after just a few laps. In the third race, the Chinese Grand Prix , Grosjean scored his first Formula 1 points with a sixth place. A race later in Bahrain , with a third place, he finished his first podium in Formula 1. In Canada , he managed to surpass this result with a second place. One race later, at the European Grand Prix , Grosjean was for long stretches in second place, but he retired in the second half of the race with technical problems. At the Hungarian Grand Prix , he achieved another podium finish with a third place. In the race he was initially ahead of his teammate Raikkonen, who overtook him after his last pit stop. One race later, at the Belgian Grand Prix , Grosjean caused a collision at the start. Although Hamilton was next to him, he pulled that side and collided with him. Other cars were subsequently hit. Four drivers were eliminated in the collision. No driver was seriously injured. Because of this starting collision, the race stewards blocked Grosjean for a race and imposed a fine of 50,000 euros. It was Grosjean's seventh incident in race twelve. At the Japanese Grand Prix , Grosjean was involved in his eighth start collision this season, for which he received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty. Then there was increased criticism in the Formula 1 environment. At the end of the season he finished eighth overall with 96 points.

In 2013 , Grosjean played his second Formula 1 season at the side of Raikkonen for Lotus. After scoring the points in the first three races, he finished third in the Bahrain Grand Prix . He repeated this result in Germany , Korea , Japan and India . At the US Grand Prix , Grosjean finished second for the first time of the season. He finished the season in seventh place overall. With 132 to 183 points he lost again internally to Raikkonen, who had been replaced in the last two races by Heikki Kovalainen due to injury .

In 2014 , Grosjean received a new team-mate at Lotus in Pastor Maldonado . When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose 8. He already used this start number in the 2013 season. He came in eighth twice. At the end of the season he was 14th in the drivers' standings with 8 points. In 2015 , Grosjean stayed with Lotus. He came third at the Belgian Grand Prix . He finished the season in eleventh place overall with 51 points.

Haas F1 (since 2016)

Grosjean in the Haas

For the Formula 1 World Championship in 2016 , Grosjean was actually still planned as a regular driver at Lotus, but he informed the team in mid-September that he would be leaving at the end of the season. Instead, Grosjean switched to the US racing team Haas , who had just entered Formula 1. Grosjean scored the first points for Haas with sixth place at the season opener in Australia . One race later in Bahrain , he topped the result with fifth place. He finished the season in 13th place overall and internally beat Esteban Gutiérrez with 29 to 0 points . In 2017 , Grosjean stayed with Haas in Formula 1. His new teammate was Kevin Magnussen . At the end of the season he was 13th overall with 28 points.

In the Formula 1 World Championship in 2018 Grosjean went again for Haas at the start. In fourth place at the Austrian Grand Prix he achieved the best result in the team's history. The Italian Grand Prix ended Grosjean in sixth place but was disqualified due to a protest by Renault later because of irregularities in his vehicle. At the end of the season he finished 14th overall with 37 points. Grosjean also competed for Haas in 2019 . He finished the season in 18th place overall with 8 points. In 2020 he will continue to drive for the team. After the seventh race, he is currently in 21st and last place in the drivers' standings.
