The 2019 US Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Emirates United States Grand Prix 2019 ) took place on November 3rd at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin and was the nineteenth race of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship .

After the Mexican Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' championship with 74 points from Valtteri Bottas and 127 points from Charles Leclerc . Only Hamilton and Bottas had arithmetical chances for the drivers' world championship. Mercedes was already the constructors' world champion 186 points ahead of Ferrari , while Red Bull Racing was 311 points behind in third.

At the US Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available.

Sebastian Vettel (seven), Daniel Ricciardo (five), Antonio Giovinazzi , Daniil Kwjat , Kevin Magnussen , Max Verstappen (four each), Lance Stroll (three), Romain Grosjean , Hamilton, Leclerc, Kimi Räikkönen (two each), Alexander Albon , Pierre Gasly , Sergio Pérez , George Russell and Carlos Sainz jr. (one at a time) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (six times), Raikkonen and Vettel (once each), three former winners competed in this Grand Prix. Hamilton won the race once when it was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2007 .

In the first free practice, Verstappen was fastest with a lap time of 1: 34.057 minutes ahead of Vettel and Albon.

In the second free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 33.232 minutes ahead of Leclerc and Verstappen. After an accident by Grosjean, the training was interrupted for a few minutes.

In the third free practice session, Verstappen was fastest in 1: 33.305 minutes ahead of Vettel and Lando Norris .

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Norris was fastest. The two Williams drivers, Pérez and the two Alfa Romeo drivers retired.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, all other drivers had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. The Mercedes and Ferrari drivers as well as Verstappen set their lap times on the medium mixture, all other drivers on the soft mixture. Leclerc was the fastest. The Haas pilots, Stroll, Nico Hülkenberg and Kwjat were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. Bottas set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 32.029 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Verstappen. It was the eleventh pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship, of which the fifth this season. Most recently, he was on pole position at the British Grand Prix .

Pérez had to start from the pit lane because in the second free practice session he ignored the request to have his vehicle weighed.

Bottas won the race ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen. It was Bottas' seventh victory in the Formula 1 World Championship, the fourth of which this season. The remaining points were placed by Leclerc, Albon, Ricciardo, Norris, Sainz, Hülkenberg and Pérez. Since Leclerc set the fastest lap and finished the race in the top ten, he received an additional point.

Second place was enough for Hamilton to win his sixth World Drivers Championship early. Bottas was now the runner-up with his victory, Leclerc remained third. In the constructors' championship, too, the positions remained unchanged, the first three positions were fixed.
