The 1972 US Grand Prix, which took place in Watkins Glen on October 8, was the twelfth and final race of the 1972 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
A total of 31 vehicles were registered for the season finale. Many teams competed with three or four cars. In addition to Emerson Fittipaldi and Dave Walker , Reine Wisell , who had already competed for the team at the previous Canadian Grand Prix, was signed up again at Lotus . As in the French Grand Prix, Tyrrell fielded a third car for Patrick Depailler . McLaren enabled Jody Scheckter to make his Formula 1 debut at the wheel of the previous replacement car for the two regular drivers.
Surtees trained with four drivers, with John Surtees declining to participate in the race in favor of Tim Schenken . He finally ended his career as a Formula 1 driver and from then on concentrated entirely on his work as a designer and team boss. Another Surtees racing car was rented to guest starter Sam Posey , who used it privately. BRM also brought four cars to the start again, this time the fourth being driven by Brian Redman , who had occasionally been a substitute driver for McLaren during the season.
training
Last year's world champion, Jackie Stewart , secured pole position in front of the two regular McLaren drivers Peter Revson and Denis Hulme . Behind them, François Cevert and Carlos Reutemann qualified ahead of Clay Regazzoni , Chris Amon and debutant Jody Scheckter.
run
After problems in the warm-up on Sunday morning, Amon decided to start from the back of the field in a replacement car. His seventh starting position then remained empty.
Stewart took the lead in front of Hulme. Behind it, Regazzoni collided with Reutemann and Revson. This enabled Emerson Fittipaldi to take third place. This was followed by Scheckter, the well-started Jacky Ickx and finally Regazzoni, who was able to continue the race without any problems despite the collision, while his two opponents each had to pit for repairs.
Fittipaldi had to pit on the fifth lap due to a puncture. As a result, Scheckter took third place. Meanwhile, Cevert overtook the two Ferraris and, a little later, Scheckter as well. About halfway through the race he also managed to overtake Hulme and thus enable a Tyrrell double victory.
When it started to rain lightly towards the end of the race, Scheckter made a mistake on the slippery track and thereby lost his fourth place to Ronnie Peterson, who started from 26th, and ended up ninth.
The double victory in the most highly endowed race of the year brought the Tyrrell team a considerable amount of money. Stewart also managed a Grand Slam by taking pole position, the fastest race lap and the win, and by leading the race throughout.
Registration list
1 The Surtees TS14 with the starting number 24T was available to Mike Hailwood as a T-Car , but was never used.
2 John Surtees and Tim Schenken took turns during training in the Surtees TS14 with starting number 24.
