The Ferrari 312B2 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the Formula 1 World Championship from 1971 to 1973.

Development history

In 1971 the 312B was revised and became the 312B2. The new Scuderia racing car had smoother lines than its predecessor and an internal rear suspension. The twelve-cylinder 180 ° V engine was revised and now developed 485 hp at 12,500 rpm. The 312B2 made its racing debut at the Monaco Grand Prix .

Racing history

The three factory drivers Jacky Ickx , Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti had problems with driving behavior all year round, which were mainly caused by the tires, which were difficult to bring to the required operating temperature. Ickx even switched back to the 312B at the Italian Grand Prix , but retired with engine failure.

In 1971, the Scuderia could only get one victory with the 312B2. Ickx triumphed in the rainy Dutch Grand Prix , as the tire problem played no role in the rain.

In 1972 the car's suspensions were modified. The engine has also been redesigned to increase the output by a further 10 HP (7 kW). Nevertheless, the 312B2 was clearly inferior to the competition from Tyrrell and Lotus . The Scuderia was only able to achieve a victory at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring . However, this was mainly due to Jacky Ickx's driving skills. The 312B2 was also used in the first races in 1973 and was replaced by the 312B3 from the Spanish Grand Prix .
