The Ferrari 330LM GTO , also Ferrari 330 GTO, was a racing car that the Scuderia Ferrari engineers developed for sports car races in 1962.

Development history and technology

The Ferrari 330 GTO was a special edition of the Ferrari 250 GTO . The chassis of the 330 GTO was closely related to the LMB developed in 1963 and only differed in a few technical details. At Ferrari, a change in the regulations for sports car races was used as an opportunity to transfer the 4-liter V12 engine from the Ferrari 400 Superamerica into the aforementioned 250 GTO chassis. The unit (type 163, bore × stroke: 77 × 71 mm), equipped with three Weber 42DCW carburettors, drew 250 kW (340 hp) at 7000 rpm from a displacement of 3967 cm³. Outwardly, chassis 3765A could hardly be distinguished from the 250 GTOs.

Racing history

Only two international races of the 330LM GTO can be found in the publications on international sports car races. 1962 were Willy Mairesse and Mike Parkes at the 1000 km race on the Nordschleife of Nurburgring, second overall; beaten only by teammates Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien , who drove a Ferrari Dino 246SP . The gap to the winners was 2: 21.3 minutes after a race distance of 1003.640 kilometers.

The second outing was at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1962 . To make the confusion about the Ferrari type designations even bigger, the car is on the starting list as a 250 GTI / 330 LM. Lorenzo Bandini was Mike Parkes' partner in Le Mans . During the race, Parkes got stuck in the sand in the Mulsanne's run-off zone. When trying to get the car out of its precarious position, the engine overheated and the team had to give up.

The car stayed with Ferrari until 1965, but was no longer used in any races. Then the vehicle to has been Ferdinando Latteri sold, the so hillclimb denied. The GTO came to the USA in 1967 , was restored in 1985 and is now owned by a US collector.
