Michael Johnson "Mike" Parkes (born September 24, 1931 in Richmond , Surrey , England , † August 28, 1977 in Riva presso Chieri , Italy ) was a British racing driver and engineer . It started in Formula 1 and sports car races in the 1960s and early 1970s .
Career
Mike Parkes' father was the former chairman of automaker Alvis Cars . Parkes was born into a world of automobiles and motorsports . He was trained as an engineer with the Rootes Group in Coventry . He was employed there until 1962 when his professional racing career began. In 1955, Mike Parkes and Tim Fry developed the Hillman Imp , which was supposed to be just a study. In 1957, Parkes received an invitation from Lotus to be a test driver at Le Mans. In the early 1960s he completely switched to motorsport until Scuderia Ferrari hired him as an engineer and test driver in 1966 to replace John Surtees.
From 1962 , Parkes competed in the World Sports Car Championship in a Ferrari 250 GTO and Ferrari prototypes . By 1967 he finished in these endurance races with his respective partners five times first, eleven times second and three times third.
In 1966 and 1967 he drove six Formula 1 races for Ferrari . In his first Formula 1 start at the French Grand Prix in Reims , he finished second behind Jack Brabham . He achieved another second place after starting from pole position at the Italian Grand Prix in the same year.
In 1967 he finished fifth in the Dutch Grand Prix . At the Belgian Grand Prix he had a serious accident on the first lap at the Blanchimont , when he lost control on an oil trail and sustained serious leg injuries in the following accident. He ended his career. Despite only having driven six Grand Prix races, of which he was only able to finish three, he scored a total of 14 world championship points.
Mike Parkes did not race for three years after his recovery. During this time he made friends with the Swiss racing team owner Georges Filipinetti and moved to his Scuderia. There he dealt with technology and its management. In 1970 he tried again with racing at Scuderia Filipinetti . But there were no successes.
At this time he built the 128 Filipinetti Fiats. He also developed a Fiat Filipinetti 128 Stradale, which the Fiat group had planned as an exclusive racing sports car in street version. However, this car was never produced. At the urging of Fiat, he developed the Filipinetti Fiat X1 / 9 in early 1973 , which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. After the sudden death of Georges Filipinetti and the subsequent closure of his Scuderia, Parkes was hired by Lancia . There he largely developed the technology of the Lancia Stratos .
In 1977 Parkes had a fatal accident in a traffic accident in Riva presso Chieri near Turin .
