Buenos Aires 1000 km race in 1972
The ninth 1000 km race of Buenos Aires , also Buenos Aires 1000 Kilometers, Buenos Aires , took place on January 9, 1972 at the Autódromo Juan y Oscar Alfredo Gálvez and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
The 1972 World Sports Car Championship began with the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires in January 1972 . At the beginning of the year, new sporting and technical regulations came into force. The most important innovation was the limitation of the displacement of the group 5 sports cars to 3 liters. This meant that racing vehicles such as the Porsche 917 , the Ferrari 512S and the Lola T70 could no longer be used. However, the new guidelines made Formula 1 technology possible in long-distance races . This affected the motorization of many participants and made it possible to use the Cosworth V8 engine. Since the V12 engine from Matra only had a displacement of three liters, the Matra MS670 were now among the favorites of the races. Ferrari had already developed a 3-liter prototype in 1971 with the Ferrari 312PB .
In Buenos Aires, Matra was missing, which led to the decision between the Italian teams Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. After a 1000 km race distance, the Scuderia celebrated a double victory.
