Victor Henry "Vic" Elford (* 10. June 1935 in London ) is a former, in the 1960s and 1970s active British automobile - racing driver and Formula 1 -Pilot.

Racing career

Because of his diverse activities and successes, Elford is considered one of the greatest all-rounders in motorsport history . He contested his first race in 1961 with a Mini from BMC , his first rally in 1962 in a DKW . From 1968 up to and including 1971 he took part in a total of 13 Grand Prix in Formula 1. He made his debut on July 7, 1968 at the French Grand Prix , his last appearance was the 1971 German Grand Prix . In total, “Quick Vic” scored eight world championship points for the teams of Cooper , McLaren and BRM . A few years later Elford was again active in the F1 World Championship, in 1979 as manager of the German ATS Formula 1 team. Within just three months, Elford succeeded in making ATS and its driver Hans-Joachim Stuck competitors for championship points after the team had previously had difficulties qualifying for races at all.

Vic Elford was also known in the sports car scene and was among others. a. often used by Porsche as a works driver. In a Porsche 908 he won the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring three times , in 1968 with Joseph Siffert , 1970 with Kurt Ahrens and 1971 with Gérard Larrousse ; In 1969 he was third with Ahrens. In the USA he successfully took part in both TransAm and CanAm races in the early 1970s . In addition, Elford was a victorious rally driver, especially as a works driver for Porsche. One of his outstanding achievements in the dance of the Wild Rider troupe was the overall victory in the Monte Carlo Rally of 1968. In addition to numerous other activities on race tracks and rally courses Vic Elford was on 4 February 1967, the Lydden Hill Race Circuit in Kent with a brand new Porsche 911 R from British Porsche importer AFN also won the first rallycross race in car racing history.

In Steve McQueen's film Le Mans , Vic Elford can be seen in action several times as the driver of a Porsche 917 in close-up shots. In the movie The Speed Merchants of Michael Keyser he has been a principal narrator to hear, so as the main narrator and commentator. After Elford had left his own vehicle in front of running cameras at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and rescued a driver colleague from his burning Ferrari , the then French President Georges Pompidou awarded him the title Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite for courage and demonstrated heroism .
