A total of 43 teams were registered. After Ferrari withdrew from the world championship at the end of 1973, their works drivers had to look around for new contracts if they wanted to stay in the sports car world championship. Despite the withdrawal of Ferrari, there was a variety of vehicles in the three classes - sports cars up to 3-liter displacement, sports cars up to 2-liter displacement and GT vehicles.

Autodelta was able to win the opening race of the season, the 1000 km race in Monza , with drivers Arturo Merzario and Mario Andretti , but then Matra had four successes in a row. In Spa won Jean-Pierre Jarier and guest driver Jacky Ickx . Jarier shared the cockpit with Jean-Pierre Beltoise in the 1000 km race on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring . In Imola and Le Mans won Henri Pescarolo and Gerard Larrousse . Besides Matra and Alfa Romeo who had Gulf GR7 just only an outside chance as the plant - Porsche Carrera RSR .

Four training sessions of 90 minutes each were driven, and Henri Pescarolo achieved pole position in the Matra with a time of 1.35.879 . This corresponded to an average speed of 221.732 km / h. In the race, the works Matra set the pace. Only the Alfa Romeo of Rolf Stommelen and Carlos Reutemann was able to stay on the same lap as the Pescarolo / Larrousse-Matra until the middle of the race, but was canceled after 104 laps. The best place for one of the two Ligier JS2s was sixth in the race, but both cars did not finish. In the end, Pescarolo and Larousse celebrated their third win of the season and at the end were three laps ahead of the Alfa Romeo of Carlo Facetti and Andrea de Adamich .
