Claude Haldi (born November 28, 1942 in Lausanne ; † December 25, 2017 ) was a Swiss automobile racing driver .

Career

Claude Haldi's career - which began in a hill climb in 1965 - lasted more than two decades. Haldi, who only competed in touring and sports car races, is the Swiss with the most participations in the well - known long-distance race on the Sarthe with 22 Le Mans starts .

The wealthy Haldi competed in all major sports car races in Europe. He drove in the 1000 km race in Paris , the 1000 km race in Monza , the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring , the 24 hours of Spa and in all other great sports car classics. In 1969 he finished second in the overall standings at the Spa 24-hour race and in 1973 he and partner Leo Kinnunen finished the Targa Florio in third overall.

In the 1970s, he was one of the best drivers in the GT class and also competed regularly in the German racing championship . He celebrated racing victories in Dijon and Hockenheim . In 1970 he secured the overall standings in the GT class of the European Hill Climb Championship . In 1977 he achieved his only victory in the sports car world championship when he won the 6-hour race at Hockenheim with Bob Wollek and John Fitzpatrick .

In Le Mans he failed to achieve good results despite 22 participations. He achieved his best placement in 1979 with 11th place in the overall ranking in a Porsche 935 . His good contacts with Porsche - Haldi financed many of his races from his own resources and almost always used vehicles from the German sports car manufacturer - also opened him up to two factory engagements as a driver at Le Mans.

Since the end of his racing career in 1993, he has been working on expanding his economic ventures. Haldi was the owner of several industrial companies and Vice President of the Swiss Automobile Club and died in December 2017 after a long period of Alzheimer's disease .
