Günter Steckkönig (* 1936 ) is an engineer and former German racing driver.

Career

Günter Steckkönig began his apprenticeship as a car mechanic at Porsche on April 14, 1953 . After further training as a technician and working in the technical office, he switched to engine design at Mercedes-Benz for a short time before returning to Porsche. There he worked in the driving test department and also took part in automobile races.

Steckkönig started his racing career as a private driver in touring car racing in a VW Beetle in the early 1960s . He later switched to an NSU Prinz TT and thus acquired a racing driver's license.

He drove his first long-distance races in the sports car world championship in 1970 with a Porsche 914/6 GT in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring and later in the 1000 km race in Zeltweg . There he was able to place himself on a 3rd and 1st place in the GT2.0 group. A year later he started for the first time at the Targa Florio with Willi Kauhsen and Ferfried von Hohenzollern for Strähle Autosport on a 914/6 GT and achieved 3rd place in the GT2.0 class. In 1972 Steckkönig competed with Giulio Pucci in a Porsche 911 S at the Targa Florio and despite an accident was able to achieve 6th place overall and the GT + 2.0 class victory.
In the same year he also started a season in the 1st division of the German Racing Championship and finished 5th in the overall standings. In 1973 he drove the Targa Florio for the last time and was able to achieve 4th place in the S3.0 classification with a Porsche 911 Carrera RSR for the Martini Racing Team .

Steckkönig contested his first race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1976 with Ernst Kraus in a Porsche 908/03 Turbo from the Joest team. Both drivers finished 5th in Group 6. In 1981 he started again for the Joest team in a Porsche 935 J at Le Mans, but had to give up the race prematurely because of a fire in the car. His last start was in the sports car world championship and he had a Porsche 930 in Group B at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1983 . He and his driver colleagues Claude Haldi and Bernd Schiller could not finish the race because of an accident. He was last placed in a race with Kees Nierop in 1986 at the 3-hour race in Daytona in a Porsche 961 . With the racing car they could achieve 11th place in the GTP ranking.

In 1988 Steckkönig ended his racing career before he left Porsche AG, which was economically troubled at the time, and went into early retirement in 1992.
