Targa Florio 1973

The 57th Targa Florio also 57 ° Targa Florio, Palermo, Piccolo Circuito delle Madonie, Sicilia , in Sicily took place on May 13, 1973 and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
Even before the start of the race, the organizers of the Targa Florio knew that the 57th edition of this road race would be the last Targa with world championship status. The officials of the Commission Sportive Internationale had made it unequivocally clear that this decision was final. The first Targa took place in 1906 and ended with a win for Alessandro Cagno on an Itala 35 / 40HP. Itala , the company that built the winning vehicle, stopped producing automobiles in 1935. The safety precautions that were considered sufficient in the early days of motorsport had become completely unacceptable by the 1970s. While the organizers of circuit races increasingly tried to improve track safety, on the Piccolo circuito delle Madonie next to nothing happened in this regard. However, the organizer was to be credited with the fact that it was almost impossible to completely secure and cordon off a 72-kilometer street course. Again and again spectators ran onto the track, some of them used the race to test their courage , stood in the middle of the street and only jumped to the side just before the cars arrived. During training in 1973, too, vehicles, including trucks , were parked at the edge of the track and thus on the lane of the racing cars. There were hardly any run-off zones and marshals were a rarity.
The race
Charles Blyth's accident
The racing week began with the first fatal accident. The British private driver Charles Blyth had registered a Lancia Fulvia HF for himself and his friend and teammate Robert Cuthbertson . During the technical inspection before the first practice session on Wednesday, May 9th, the tank of the Lancia was declared illegal by the commissioners and the British were instructed to carry out the necessary repairs before the start of the race. Blyth and Cuthbertson drove off the track onto the road that connects Palermo with Buonfornello , which was open to normal traffic. There the Lancia collided with a Fiat 1100 that was being driven by Antonio Guagliardo . Guagliardo was in the car with his five-year-old son Domenico and the mechanic Vincenzo Sollazzo. On a trailer , the Fiat pulled a Porsche 911S that Guagliardo had registered for the race. The Lancia crashed into the Fiat at high speed and while the three Fiat occupants were only slightly injured, an emergency ambulance brought the two British people in critical condition to the Ospedale Neurochirurgico in Palermo. One of the first who arrived at the accident site, was ARTURO MERZARIO that the plant - Ferrari 312PB came from the technical inspection. He immediately provided first aid (Merzario had tried several times in his career to help fellow drivers after accidents and saved lives in the process. At the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires in 1971 , he tried unsuccessfully to free Ignazio Giunti, who was trapped in a burning Ferrari 312PB . At the 1976 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, he freed Niki Lauda from the Ferrari 312T2, which was also burning . While Cuthbertson survived, Charles Blyth died a day later. The British racing driver Vic Elford paid for the return transport of the body .
Teams, vehicles and drivers
The absence of Matra Sports and Gulf Research made little impression on the Sicilians. According to the organizer, 700,000 spectators are said to have followed the race along the route. She was interested in the Italian works cars from Ferrari , Alfa Romeo and Lancia . Ferrari registered two 312PB for the driver pairings Arturo Merzario / Nino Vaccarella and Jacky Ickx / Brian Redman . For the Sicilians, Vaccarella, born in Palermo, was a folk hero who had won the Targa Florio twice - in 1965 with Lorenzo Bandini in the Ferrari 275P2 and in 1971 with Toine Hezemans in the Alfa Romeo T33 / 3 . Jacky Ickx made his Targa Florio debut in the second 312PB. Autodelta reported two Alfa Romeo T33 / TT / 12 for Clay Regazzoni / Carlo Facetti and Rolf Stommelen / Andrea de Adamich . Lancia was also represented with a works car. Sandro Munari and Jean-Claude Andruet drove the Stratos .
The strongest competition for the Italian cars came from Porsche . Three Carrera RSR - prototypes were brought to Sicily. The Porsches were driven by Herbert Müller , Gijs van Lennep , Leo Kinnunen , Claude Haldi , Günter Steckkönig and Giulio Pucci . Giulio Pucci was the son of Baron Antonio Pucci , who won the Targa in 1964 as a partner of Colin Davis in the works Porsche 904 GTS .
More serious accidents
The race was also overshadowed by serious accidents and the death of three spectators. The first incident occurred just before the start. When approaching the start of the race, Stefano Buonapace and Matteo Sgarlata's Chevron B23 came off the track near the city of Cefalù and overturned into a group of spectators standing too close to the edge of the track. The car caught fire and burned out. While the two drivers survived with minor injuries, the two young Sicilians Sebastiano di Natale (20 years old) and Antonio di Scilipoti (17 years old) died at the scene of the accident. Several people were admitted to nearby hospitals with broken bones. Another young Sicilian, Santi Siracusa (19 years old), survived seriously injured.
On the seventh lap the Sardinian Ferruccio Deiana, who drove an Alpine A110 , left the track in the village of Scillato and also drove into a group of spectators. Two men were seriously injured: Giuseppe Bono (60 years old) and Giuseppe Mazzola (33 years old), both from Montelepre . Mazzola survived and was able to fully recover. Giuseppe Bono died that evening in Termini Imerese hospital from his injuries.
The course of the race
Alfa Romeo had to forego a vehicle on race day. Clay Regazzoni had an accident in the car with the number 7 during the final training session. He came off the road in the mountainous part of the route, the car overturned and remained with the wheels up in a field. Regazzoni was unharmed. Right from the start, the fastest in training, Arturo Merzario, led in the Ferrari 312PB ahead of Rolf Stommelen in the Alfa Romeo and his teammate Jacky Ickx. It was followed by Sandro Munari in a Lancia and Herbert Müller in a Porsche. Even before the third lap was over, both Ferrari and the remaining Alfa Romeo were eliminated. Arturo Merzario had a puncture at the end of the first lap. Instead of replacing the flat tire with the spare wheel that was carried with him, he drove on to the boxes on the rim. There the tire was finally changed. When Merzario was back on the road, the rear suspension, which had been damaged on the rim while driving, broke. Jacky Ickx hit a wall with the Ferrari on the second lap, the front end of the car being so badly damaged that he had to give up a short time later. Rolf Stommelen handed the Alfa Romeo over to Andrea de Adamich at the end of the second lap. De Adamich collided in the Alfa on lap three with Ugo Locatelli's Lancia Fulvia Sport . The suspension of the T33 / TT / 12 broke.
Herbert Müller and Gijs van Lennep had a problem-free race in the Porsche Carrera RSR, who won with a lead of six minutes on Sandro Munari and Jean-Claude Andruet in the Lancia Stratos.
