The Ferrari Dino 206S was a racing car that the Scuderia Ferrari engineers developed for sports car races in 1966.

Background and technology

The Dino 206S, developed by Ferrari in 1966, was the successor to the 206P from 1965. The Dino 206 was often referred to as the “smaller” P3 , as the bodies, which were both built by Piero Drogo , were very similar. Like all 1960 Dino sports car had the type of car a 2-liter V6 - mid-engine . The Dino 206S was designed for sports car and hill climbs . 50 vehicles were to be built, but protracted strikes in northern Italy in the spring of 1966 caused a considerable production backlog, so that only 18 units were completed.

Racing history

This type of Ferrari racing car had a long racing history that spanned the period from 1966 to 1973. A total of 99 entries were submitted by different teams and owners in sports car races during this time. 13 overall victories could be achieved; 25 podium places and twelve class wins are recorded. In mountain race of Dino 206S could not connect to the successes of the 206P, with the 1965 Ludovico Scarfiotti in the European Hill Climb Championship won the sports car rating. In 1968 the Scuderia gave up the dinosaur concept for hill climbs and in 1969 developed its own mountain spider with the Ferrari 212E Montagna .

In sports car races, the 206S made its racing debut at the Sebring 12-hour race in 1966 . Ludovico Scarfiotti and Lorenzo Bandini finished fifth overall. The 22 laps deficit on overall winners Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in the works Ford was considerable. There were successes at the Targa Florio and the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring this year, each with second places. In the Targa, Jean Guichet and Giancarlo Baghetti were at the wheel of chassis 0852; Scarfiotti and Bandini chassis 004 drove on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring ; Pedro Rodríguez and Richie Ginther were third in chassis 008.

The first race win came in 1966 at the 1966 Coppa Cittá di Enna, part of the sports car world championship, in a Dino privately registered by Marsilio Pasotti . Scarfiotti celebrated his first victory in a hill climb at the Sierra-Montagna hill climb in 1966 . The last victory was in 1968 by Edoardo Lualdi at the Coppa Citta d'Orivetto ; the last race in 1973 at the Imola 2-liter sports car race .
