The Ferrari 642 was a Formula 1 racing car that Scuderia Ferrari used in the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship.

Development history and technology

After the successful 1990 season , in which Scuderia narrowly missed both titles in Formula 1 with the Ferrari 641 , a failure followed in 1991 with the 642. The Scuderia management had underestimated the progress of the competition and made little changes to the new car compared to the previous model. Like the 641, the 642 had a semi-automatic 7-speed gearbox, the 65-degree V12 engine and suspension on double wishbones with internal springs and shock absorbers operated by push rods. Only the body was revised and the 642 had better aerodynamic values than the 641.

Racing history

The 642 made its debut at the US Grand Prix with Alain Prost and Jean Alesi at the wheel. Prost finished second in the race, but at the next world championship races it quickly became clear that the 642 was not a winning car. The Scuderia quickly began developing an alternative, the 643 , which was used from the French Grand Prix . In addition to Prost's second place in the US, Alesi's third place at the Monaco Grand Prix was the second podium finish with the 642.
